Job overview

The governors are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and dynamic scientist to teach in our innovative and highly successful Science Faculty. Although a Chemistry or Physics specialism would be preferred, the most important criteria we are looking for in any candidate is a passion for science and a gift for making the complex simple.

Darland High School is an 11-16 English medium comprehensive school with 860 students on roll. Oversubscribed in Key Stage 3, the school has grown markedly in recent years and is now the largest school in Wrexham. Serving a cluster of villages in between Wrexham and Chester, the school enjoys easy road and rail access to North West England and North Wales.

The school has a reputation for academic excellence, achieving results at both key stages, which are consistently above both local and national averages. We have close relations with the local community as well as with neighbouring schools, with whom there is a spirit of active curriculum collaboration. The Science Faculty is renowned for excellent results and is consistently in the top quartile for value added. For the past four years, the percentage of students achieving Level 5+ at the end of KS3 has been over 90%. At Key stage 4, results have been similarly high with 72% achieving C grade or above in 2018. The faculty is currently teaching the new suite of KS4 qualifications from WJEC, for first certification in 2018, including Double Award science and Separate Science. There are 7 full time members of staff in the Faculty. Housed in a new purpose built science block, the faculty is very well resourced and renowned for innovative teaching and excellent teamwork.

This appointment, will suit a newly qualified teacher, as well as more experienced teachers. Please see either this site or the School website at  www.darland.wrexham.sch.uk to download further information and a Wrexham CBC application form. The deadline for applications is midday on Wednesday 8th May 2019. Interviews will be held on Monday 13th May 2019.

Darland High School is a hidden gem in the picturesque village of Rossett in North East Wales. We are a mixed, English-language high school serving pupils aged 11-16 in the surrounding villages of Rossett, Marford, Gresford, Holt and Llay. Set in extensive beautiful grounds the school has 850 pupils on roll.

Established in 1958, Darland High School became a comprehensive school in 1972. An extensive building programme over the years has seen the creation of the Griffin Centre, a modern two story building, housing ‘state of the art’ science laboratories and ICT suites. A new library, complete with a full ICT suite, a remodelled foyer and new cookery facilities have also been added recently.

In September 2019 we welcomed new Headteacher Joanne Lee, who has brought in many changes and the school is a 'buzz' of activity. We are at an exciting time, along with extensive refurbishment of the site our team are in the process of developing an engaging New Curriculum for a new generation of students.

Our team of over 130 staff, dedicated and hard-working, are driving towards our common goal - to offer an excellent education to the communities we serve.

We welcome tours of the school prior to application.
