Job overview

Part-time, 0.6 (3 days)

Do you want to make a ‘Big Bang’ by inspiring the next generation of scientists and engineers?

Airedale Academies Trust is seeking to appoint a motivated and committed Science teacher to join the vibrant science department at Airedale Academy and become part of the school’s continuing journey towards ‘Outstanding’.

We want the best for our pupils, so the successful candidate will need to be an outstanding teacher with a track record of success, who has the ambition, vision and determination to engage with, inspire and motivate students across the age and ability range. However, in return we can offer a wealth of opportunities and working environment where we support one another in our common goal of encouraging our students to dream, aspire and achieve.

Airedale Academy is an 11-18 school located in the former industrial heartland of Yorkshire, at the junction of the M62 and A1. We have been a standalone academy since April 2011 – one of the first of the new wave of good and outstanding schools who chose to convert to academy status. Our school is at the heart of the local community and we have strong links with our partner primary schools – a relationship which, in August 2014, led to the development of our single academy trust into a multi-academy Trust with three of our feeder primary schools. Our MAT was formed with the sole purpose of providing a network of support across the pyramid so that we stand together as a strong unit where the ethos for all is ‘children first’.

We believe in trying our best to ensure that staff are happy and fulfilled in their work and receive the training and support they need to perform their role. We run a weekly training programme – ‘Excel’ – which any member of staff can attend if that week’s subject is of interest to them. We are also a strategic partner in the Outwood Teaching School Alliance, which gives us access to a range of development programmes for staff at all levels. We believe in supporting staff to achieve a good work-life balance and our wellbeing programme includes a range of benefits including break-time refreshments, access to fitness facilities and visits by a car valet company, as well as regular staff social events.

There’s no denying that the catchment we serve is an area of high socio-economic deprivation, and some of the children who join our school have a difficult home-life, but irrespective of their background the vast majority of our students are polite, well-behaved and willing to learn – and the handful that aren’t are dealt with swiftly through our robust behaviour management systems. For us, though, a student’s background is no reason for them not to aspire to be the best they can be, and we can count Oxbridge graduates, participants in prestigious business intern programmes and actors on blockbuster movies amongst our former students.

Prospective applicants are warmly encouraged to visit the Academy before applying – we’re exceptionally proud of our school and its pupils, and love to show visitors around. Please call us to make an appointment.

This is a temporary post for one year.  As this post will be predominantly working with Years 7 and 8, applications are welcomed from primary teachers wishing to move into KS3.

For an informal discussion regarding the post please contact Steve Miller, Head of Science on 01977 664555. Further details and an application form are available on our website www.airedaleacademy.com  or by emailing HR@airedaleacademy.com or on 01977 664555.

Closing date for applications 0800 am Tuesday 11 July 2017

Date of interview 14 July 2017

Airedale Academies Trust is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff to share this commitment.  The successful applicant will be required to complete an enhanced DBS check.

“Leaders have planned a curriculum with breadth and ambition. The opportunities this

curriculum offers are open to all, including pupils with special educational needs and/or

disabilities.”
