Teacher of SEN - starting August 2018

Responsibilities

We are seeking a Teacher of Special Educational Needs. The position will be a full-time two years renewable contract starting August 2018.

Teacher of SEN within our Inclusion Faculty (IN)

We have five teachers of SEN and a wider team of educational assistants. Learners with individual needs are largely accommodated within mainstream classes in line with our ethos and values of inclusion. Mainstream teachers are supported by SEN teachers to plan, differentiate and remove barriers to learning as they arise. In addition, some learners will have appropriate adjustments to their timetable and will receive personalised programmes either in individual or small groups.

As well as students who can access the majority of their mainstream lessons through expert monitoring and adjustment, we also have a specialist learning centre accommodating 24 students with higher levels of needs. Students are fully included in the life of the school, are uniquely valued for their differences and receive exceptional teaching and support. Students who are within the Learning Support Centre roll have various levels of integration into mainstream lessons according to their need.

The Inclusion Faculty is led by Gail Wright. Working within the team, you will bring expertise in being able to differentiative the curriculum to match the very wide range of individuals needs which exist in a typical school population. Most of the team have particular areas of expertise and interest which enable us to offer expert advice and support to the community.

The successful candidate would teach discrete classes as well as supporting learners in mainstream classes. Experience of alternative accredited courses other than GCSE will be an advantage. Some of our team have been successful early years and primary teachers who have enjoyed the transition to a secondary setting. Teachers from all phases are welcome to apply.

As you will know from your experience, the ability to appreciate learners, precisely identify barriers, high quality relationships and creative planning are the most important qualities a teacher can bring.

Working at West Island School

West Island School is a rewarding environment to pursue your career as a teacher. We prioritise professional development and are engaged in appreciative inquiry developing our own practice as a community of teachers who learn from each other.

You will find your colleagues to be pro-active, passionate about our students, adaptable and supportive of you in both the school and Hong Kong. It is indeed, an exciting place to live and work.

Our students are well motivated, ambitious for themselves and for the whole school community. Our distinction is the diversity of backgrounds which creates an inspiring community of learners that motivates us as teachers.

In 2017, the average IB score was 36.7 with 2 students achieving 45 points and 4 students achieving 44 points. 49% of grades at iGCSE are A*-A. We also cater for a cohort of students who achieve highly in Btec Qualifications, 78% of grades are D*-D. As an inclusive school, we cater for a number of students who have particular learning difficulties and experience success in personalised pathways.

As a result, student outcomes are excellent and they are able to access the universities of their choice, many of which will be the most prestigious.

Over the next three years, we are planning to move towards the MYP curriculum for Years 7-9, so it would be useful but not essential if you are able to make an active contribution to this change. You do not need a detailed knowledge of the curriculum, but a willingness to learn and an empa

Requirements

Candidates should mention all subjects they are qualified to teach in their application. Previous knowledge and experience of the IB is not a pre requisite but would be helpful. About West Island School - ESF

Strength from Diversity: A Better School, A Better World

Welcome from Hong Kong and from an outstanding International school comprising over 50 nationalities in the heart of Asia.

We are a happy, dynamic and hugely successful school established in the best traditions of the English Schools Foundation. The ESF exists to provide excellence in learning for Hong Kong based students of all abilities, nationalities, cultures and beliefs who would like to be educated through the medium of English.

Our school is housed in an exciting and innovative environment from which we can see the University, Hong Kong’s largest teaching hospital, the new cyber port and the busy shipping lanes which demonstrate Hong Kong’s key position on the global superhighway.

We have an outstanding record of high academic attainment through a careful crafting of curriculum to meet our students’ needs. We believe in using best practice from around the world, recruiting excellent practitioners from a variety of countries and using their knowledge and expertise. Our curriculum is taken loosely from the National Curriculum of the United Kingdom in our lower years, IGCSEs form our middle years academic programme and we offer three ESF diplomas to our upper school students with the option to pursue the International Baccalaureate or the Advanced or Intermediate Diplomas especially created for our student cohort.

Throughout the school we practice the belief that learning takes place within and without classroom walls. We believe in experiential learning, the value of creativity, action and service which are core to student experience throughout the school and the power of student leadership, choice and decision making through the empowerment of our “student voice”.

West Island School’s distinction lies in the pursuit of high achievement and attainment in learning through support, encouragement, praise and motivation. We believe that excellence in academic and co curricular learning experiences are of equal importance to provide a basis for a dynamic and enriching life. Central to our philosophy is that our school and those within it can influence the world of today and tomorrow. The quality of the relationships between staff and students and within the student body is excellent and draws upon a wide diversity of nationalities, cultures and beliefs which we believe enriches and strengthens our school. Above all else West Island school is a happy school where people are valued and where all individuals who are part of our community can fulfil their potential as learners: whether student, parent, teacher or para professional.

These claims were validated by the Hong Kong Education Department which after inspection categorized our school as an “Outstanding School”. We are the only international school in Hong Kong to have received this prestigious award.

The English Schools Foundation (ESF) was established in 1967 and is the largest education foundation in Asia offering a liberal education through the medium of the English language to children of school age. ESF now operates five secondary schools, nine primary schools, two “all-through” Private Independent Schools, five kindergartens and a school for students with special needs. Our 18,000 students are drawn from over 75 nationalities. Increasingly, our schools are also the destination of choice for local families.
