Tes are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and inspirational Teacher of Sociology on a full-time basis from September 2020. Both experienced and newly-qualified teachers are encouraged to apply.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a thriving and expanding Sixth Form College with outstanding examination results. It is an independent Sixth Form College which has been providing high quality post – 16 education in the East of the County of East Sussex for 42 years. 

The core focus of the College work is with the 16-19 age group offering a broad range of academic and vocational courses across foundation, intermediate and advanced level. The College attracts approximately 1985 full time, 16-19 year old students of which approximately 90% are studying advanced programmes and the remaining 10% at intermediate/foundation level.

The College are looking for a well-qualified teacher of sociology to teach AS and A level sociology. The successful candidate may also contribute to the sociological elements of vocational courses as well as being a personal tutor. An ability to contribute to criminology or politics would be desirable but not essential. This role could suit a graduate who wants to go into teaching as a teacher training programme is available or an experienced teacher.

Key Responsibilities:

  • To ensure high quality of learner experience and outcomes through highly effective teaching, learning and assessment.
  • Contribute to setting standards in the subject area’s annual self-assessment report and action plan in line with the College’s planning and quality assurance procedures.
  • Plan and organise learning experiences, either directly (through teaching) or indirectly (through the management of learning and assessment) which takes account of the range of ability and prior achievement of students within a class set and the individual learning needs of students.
  • Use, or oversee, a range of appropriate teaching and assessment strategies which incorporate processes to ensure that effective learning has taken place.
  • Fully adhere to the College assessment policy and procedures.
  • Fully utilise teaching time to support learners and liaise with Personal Tutor and Additional Learning Support teams as appropriate.
  • Make effective use of resources and learning technology including using the College VLE appropriate to the subject matter/skill being taught.
  • Create a purposeful, positive and supportive teaching environment, sensitive to equal opportunity, individual needs and health and safety issues.


You Will:

  • Have a appropriate teaching qualification or be willing to undertake the DET through the College if graduate teacher
  • Have a relevant higher education qualification
  • Have successful teaching experience/practice in 14-19 age range
  • Be an outstanding teacher who is able to differentiate in their teaching and ensure the needs of all students in their classes are met
  • Have good behaviour management skills
  • Have a creative and innovative approach to the development of teaching and learning
