Job overview

Our Languages Department offers courses in French, German and Spanish with Mandarin taught as an after school lesson.  The Department benefits from a highly qualified staff of eight full-time modern linguists and three Foreign Language Assistants.  In recent years, our numbers across the languages have grown with particularly pleasing growth in German and A level numbers.

The Department has pleasant accommodation in its own block. All the classrooms are well equipped with interactive ActiveInspire whiteboards with speakers as well as voice recorders and our own suite of laptops.

On entry in Year 7 students have the choice of one Modern Language from French, German and Spanish which they follow until the end of Year 9.  At Year 9 students choose an additional Modern Language. All students are required to study at least one Modern Language to IGCSE and many students opt to take two.

Students are prepared for the Edexcel IGCSE examinations in modern languages.  Our French resources are currently based on Tricolore Totale and the Edexcel for French GCSE textbook.  For Spanish we currently loosely follow the Listos range of textbooks and our own resources, and for German we use Stimmt and the Edexcel for German GCSE Textbook.  For A level we follow the Hodder A level books for all languages.  We also subscribe to a number of teaching resources to supplement our teaching and the expectation is that all teachers will source and produce their own additional engaging non textbook resources, which are shared among colleagues.

We currently follow a fast track French route for our more able IGCSE  linguists.  These students take their IGCSE a year earlier and then move on to the DELF course in Year 11 or return to German and Spanish after sitting their French IGCSE.    French, German and Spanish are taught to AS and A2 level in the Sixth Form using the Edexcel specifications. We have French, German and Spanish Assistants who take conversation classes with small groups or even on a one to one basis in the Sixth Form and assist our Year 11 students in preparation for their GCSE oral examination.

We take a communicative approach to language learning but this is underpinned by a solid base of grammar structures. Interaction in the target language through pair-work, role plays and presentations is encouraged but the appreciation of accurate structure and use of extended vocabulary are regarded as an essential foundation for effective communication.

The Department organises a variety of trips and our range of trips.  This year we are planning trips to Paris, Andalusia, Cologne, Montpellier with further trips in the planning. It is hoped that we will extend our programme in the years to come and all teachers are expected to support our portfolio of trips by either organising or staffing them.

In addition to trips the Department runs a range of extra-curricular activities such as celebrating European Day of Languages, Journée Internationale de la Francophonie, Día de la Hispanidad as well as developing our European School links, Foreign Film Club, French Cookery Club and the Languages Newsletter.  We also arrange Theatre trips for plays performed in the target languages.

THE POST OF LANGUAGES TEACHER

We are looking for a well qualified and enthusiastic teacher who will be able to offer Spanish to A level and KS4 in another language.  The successful candidate will need to be fully up to date on teaching MFL using modern techniques as well as able to demonstrate strategies to stretch the most able within a selective environment. Willingness to participate in educational trips, either residential or as day excursions, as well as the Department’s extra-curricular activities and surgeries is viewed as a pre-requisite.  The post would suit an NQT or a more experienced teacher.e staff accommodation available on-site.

Benefits of living and working in Weybridge

Weybridge is a small popular town with a good selection of branded and independent shops, great places to eat and beautiful woodlands and canal walks. Weybridge station offers at least four trains an hour taking only 29 minutes to reach London Waterloo station.

The College is situated on the outskirts of Weybridge on an attractive 100-acre site conveniently close to the intersection of the M3 and M25 motorways and just 20 minutes from Heathrow airport.

Academics

There are over 130 teaching staff in the College with an equal split of men and women, and some staff live on campus. Rachel Owens is the incumbent Headmistress, and she and the College are members of HMC and CISC.

The school has a selective entry and is oversubscribed. The majority of children join in First Year (Year 7), although there is a smaller entry into Third Year (Year 9) and the Sixth Form (Lower Sixth). Where space allows, new students may also arrive out of these usual intakes into Second, Third and Fourth Years.

New staff and induction

There is strong support for new teaching staff starting at the College, with an extensive induction programme. Newly appointed staff are encouraged to visit in the Summer Term to receive training and guidance from the Head of Department prior to the beginning of their employment. In addition, the College offers support and on-going training for newly qualified teaching staff lead by Mr Andy Cornick, Deputy Head (Operations) who is responsible for the welfare of new staff. There is an active and social Common Room committee and a broad range of teaching staff, many who have depth of experience and knowledge of St George’s from several years with us. QTS induction is facilitated.

All the teaching staff receive excellent support from business staff: the Bursar directs over 120 College employees including administration, IT, finance and catering. The annual appraisal scheme encourages staff to develop their careers and supports them in identifying training or study to assist in their development as teachers.

We aim to provide a caring and nurturing atmosphere at our independent day school – not just for our students. For everyone who works with us too, we want to make this an enjoyable and fulfilling environment. If you’d like to be part of it, you can look forward to excelling training and support, not to mention a range of outstanding benefits.

If you enjoy working as part of a friendly team and take a real pride in a job well done, this is your opportunity to join us here at St George’s Weybridge.

St George’s Weybridge is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service.
