Job overview

Purpose of Job/Key objectives

The Modern Languages Department is well established within the School and consists of 8 members of staff, 6 of whom are native speakers

Lewes Old Grammar School is unusual in that all pupils in Year 7 are taught French, German and Spanish. As the pupils progress through the school some pupils continue with all three languages, although the majority concentrates on two. At GCSE a small number of pupils opt to study all three with a larger number opting for two. Our results are consistently very good. The students follow the EDEXCEL syllabus. At A Level students again follow the EDEXCEL syllabus. In the past the majority of our A Level students have chosen to continue to study the language at university sometimes as a single subject and sometimes with joint honours.

The Department has four teaching rooms and is well resourced; with interactive white boards, projectors and digital technology to record/practise speaking. The Department subscribes to Linguascope and other language sites and receives foreign press regularly.

The Department has the strong belief that all the pupils should be taught not only the language but the culture surrounding it therefore, the successful candidate must also have an excellent knowledge of all aspects of Spanish culture. Trips and exchanges are organised regularly and are seen as an integral way of language learning.

The successful candidate should be able to teach Spanish confidently to A level. He or she must be passionate about languages and have the ability to motivate students; being determined to help them achieve their absolute best. He or she must have excellent inter- personal skills and be able to produce innovative and good quality resources. An ability to offer French or German as a second language would be advantageous but is not essential. This role will be offered on a 12 month contract to cover maternity leave within the department.

If you feel you have the qualities we are looking for we would like to hear from you.

Lewes Old Grammar School is committed to creating an environment where each individual is known and cared for. Students are supported to achieve their academic potential. Teachers strive to develop young people who are at ease with themselves and confident to face the challenges of life.

Central to the school’s vision is the conviction that each child is an individual who has valuable capabilities. The curriculum provides opportunities that teach students how to think, rather than simply what to think. Questions are valued above answers and the pursuit of excellence is valued above standardised performance.
