We are a forward thinking Languages department committed to engaging and enthusing language learners and developing lifelong learning habits. We are looking for a like-minded colleague to join our strong and successful department.
You will be a key member of the department, creating a passion for languages and commitment to quality learning for all pupils and students across all key stages. You should be able to teach Spanish up to A level and have the desire and capacity to bring about outstanding learning in the classroom. The successful candidate will be responsible for a tutor group within a year system of pastoral care.
Pupils in Year 7 are given the opportunity to experience all four languages on a rotation basis and given the opportunity to express a preference for the language they will carry into Year 8. Those pupils who have made good progress in Year 7 are offered the choice of taking a second language. Pupils studying two foreign languages have three lessons of each language a fortnight. Those who continue with just one language have three lessons a week. In Year 9 dual linguists dual linguists continue to study both languages for three lessons each a fortnight. Single linguists continue with two lessons a week. In Years 10 & 11 dual linguists have to continue with at least one language to GCSE and single linguists may opt to continue if they so wish.
We follow the Edexcel syllabus for GCSE and Eduqas for A level. Public examination results at KS 4 and A level are good. We also offer enrichment lessons in languages for sixth form students.
The work of the department is well documented; schemes of work for all years are subject to revision annually. A variety of resources are employed, including textbooks, booklets, worksheets, CDs and DVDs. The department makes full use of the opportunities offered by the internet and subscribes to a number of websites. Pupils and students are also encouraged to make use of the independent study aides which are available to them. The department has run a number of successful trips to Spain, Germany, France and China over the years and pupils are encouraged to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities, outings and competitions throughout the year. There are sixth form and KS 4 exchanges to France.
The Languages Department currently has nine full-time and two part-time members of staff. It also employs two French, one German, one Spanish and one Mandarin language assistant. There are eight designated language classrooms, five assistant workrooms and a departmental workroom. With the exception of some senior members of the department, language teachers are allocated their own classroom, which also provides the base for their tutor group. The department has six interactive whiteboards and all other rooms are equipped with ceiling mounted projectors. All rooms are linked to the internet.
