Teacher of Spanish - NQT

Located in the beautiful town of Tervuren, near the university city of Leuven, BSB is a not for profit, inclusive fee-paying international school with 1,350 students from approximately 70 countries. There is an Early Childhood Centre for children aged 1-3. Our Primary School offers a bespoke curriculum with integrated learning themes that are inquiry based and skills driven. Whilst British-based, it is uniquely adapted to the needs of our international and multicultural student body. Students in Year 10 & 11 study for (I)GCSE and BTEC courses. Post-16 students can choose from three internationally recognised pre-university examination courses: English A Levels, International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma or BTEC. BSB has outstanding facilities and is the only international school in Belgium to have its own 25m indoor swimming pool. With an excellent record of academic achievement, BSB students go on to attend a wide range of top universities across the globe.

NQTs are encouraged to apply and, if successful, will be given mentoring support, a reduced timetable and an initial one-year contract (with the expectation of extending to a second year).

The Modern Languages Department

The Department has a Head of Modern Languages and separate Heads of German, Dutch and Spanish. Additionally, there are 11 F/T or P/T members of staff in the department.  Languages currently taught are French, German, Spanish and Dutch. French is taught throughout the school as the first additional Language. It is a core subject in the curriculum, being compulsory for students up to the end of KS4 (Year 11).

A second additional language is offered at the start of KS3 (Year 7) and students can choose between Spanish, German and Dutch. The second language is compulsory only to the end of Year 9 but many students see the value of continuing to study it; over two-thirds of each year group choose to continue up to IGCSE in Year 11.  Spanish is a very popular choice with 3 or 4 classes running in each of the KS3 year groups, and a healthy uptake at the end of Year 9. There are currently 2 large IGCSE Spanish groups running in both Year 10 and Year 11.  At post-16 level, Spanish is offered either at GCE A level or as part of the IB Diploma as a Language B (foreign language) and also an ab initio language for beginners.

The main course used for IGCSE is Cambridge IGCSE Spanish and the KS3 (Years 7-9) course is the recently introduced ‘¡Viva!’. The Department is dedicated and professional; there is good morale amongst the staff and the atmosphere is pleasant and purposeful. Schemes of work are collectively produced; materials are shared and readily available. The new appointee will find themselves able to grow professionally as part of this team and potentially have the opportunity to take on responsibility within the Spanish department.

Your Role:

The ideal candidate should be able to offer Spanish across the Secondary School age range (11-18), with the ability to teach at least one of our exam courses of the IGCSE, 'A' level and IB.  (as Language B and/or Language A). The ability to also offer another language would be an advantage.
