Job overview

We are seeking to recruit a Teacher of Spanish or French in a new school which opened its doors in September 2021 and which serves the local community in Middleton and Heywood. This role would suit a proactive and resilient person with a passion for teaching the MFL curriculum.

Edgar Wood Academy’s MFL Department is made up of a team of two highly experienced subject specialists who are committed to providing an outstanding languages curriculum. We are reflective practitioners who collaboratively plan the curriculum with the relevant pedagogy in mind.

We are passionate about ensuring progress for all pupils by delivering an ambitious curriculum that develops pupils’ oracy skills and helps them to become articulate speakers who can use the language confidently, valuing communication over perfection. We strive to ensure pupils understand the wealth of opportunities that learning a language can bring to their lives. Our curriculum has been carefully sequenced so that vocabulary is systematically taught and consistently revisited to empower pupils to use the language in a wide range of contexts. Classes are mixed ability in both Year 7 and Year 8. In Year 7, pupils learn about personality, school and free time and build upon their knowledge in Year 8 through the topics of local area, holidays, and festivals.

This is an exciting time to join Edgar Wood Academy as we are an expanding school with an intake of 300 students (180 in Year 7 and 120 in Year 8).

The school has recently moved into a modern, state-of-the-art building, with stunning views of the local countryside, but within easy access of several motorway links. We can offer the opportunity to shape and develop a curriculum which will capture students’ interests, provoke serious thinking and develop their intellectual curiosity. The curriculum will be culturally relevant to our students and will serve to develop social attitudes and behaviours, celebrate British values and ensure that students have an inclusive approach to their local and global communities. Edgar Wood Academy has an extensive enrichment programme which will ensure that all pupils are engaged in a curriculum suffused with memorable experiences and rich opportunities for learning.

Edgar Wood Academy is part of the Altus Education Partnership and, as such, our staff benefit from a wide range of support and development within a collaborative community.

To work at Edgar Wood Academy, you must aspire to be an outstanding colleague, with a willingness to share and learn. We wish to appoint someone who will help us to make a positive difference to the lives of young people in the borough.

In return, we promise a supportive and enjoyable working environment and the resources needed to carry out the role to the highest standards, including a bespoke professional development programme to support you with your future career aspirations.

Closing date: Monday 17th April 2023 at 12 noon

Interviews: Wednesday 19th April 2023

The school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults and expects all staff to share this commitment. This position is subject to an Enhanced DBS check under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974.

In accordance with the recommendations set out in KCSIE, the Trust carries out online searches on shortlisted candidates.
