Job overview

Haberdashers’ Adams is a selective state grammar school with academy status situated in the small market town of Newport in rural Shropshire. It is a boy’s school with co-educational Sixth Form although it will become co-educational in Year 7 from September 2024, taking approximately 30 girls into year 7. There are five forms of entry and currently about 1050 pupils on roll; approximately 100 of these are boarders. The Sixth Form has about 370 students of whom about 120 are girls.

 The Sports and PE Departments

The School has a Head of Sport, responsible for afternoon games for all year-groups, and a Head of PE, responsible for academic PE (GCSE and AS-level) as well as core PE. The person appointed to this post would contribute to both afternoon games and PE, reporting to the two Heads of Department. At present, six teachers teach PE (core, GCSE and AS-level) and another ten teachers contribute to afternoon games.

Games afternoons take place at Longford playing fields, which provides 100 acres of space. These fields are sited about 1 mile from school. Included here are: 6 rugby pitches, 1 football pitch, 2 cricket squares, a grass athletics track, 2 throw circles and a long jump pit. A brand-new pavilion was completed three years ago. The fields lend themselves very well to a variety of cross-country running courses.

The two departments are housed in their office adjacent to the School’s well-equipped sports hall. This building also has a class room housing a multi-purpose gym, and a range of cardio-vascular equipment. The sports hall itself is fully equipped with markings for all types of games plus cricket nets. Parallel to the front side of the hall is a discrete outdoor play area with markings for netball known as ‘the cage’. Adjacent, to the rear of the hall is a heated, covered four-lane swimming pool, which is 25 yards in length. A full-size netball court is marked out on the main playground.

 Job Description and Person Specification

The successful candidate will be expected to lead on running the school’s hockey teams; they will also be expected to participate in after-school practice sessions and Saturday fixtures.

The opportunity for this post to become a full-time one, may arise in the future. At present, we require the 0.8 post to be taught over five days.
