The Aims of the School

Hutchesons' Grammar School aims to provide boys and girls with a broad Scottish education, with the emphasis on academic excellence.

Founded in 1641, Hutchesons’ is a famous school which has always been at the forefront of teaching and learning in Scotland. Nowadays, it is a large and dynamic school of great vitality and diversity, where around 1,250 pupils from Pre-School right through to S6 follow a broad curriculum, blending the traditional and the modern. Experienced teachers are one of Hutchesons’ greatest strengths, along with the resources they need to do their job to the highest possible standards.

Hutchesons’ pupils excel in a wide variety of sports both nationally and internationally, and the quality of performance in music, drama and the arts is equally high. All pupils can follow a structured programme in and out of the classroom which broadens their outlook and helps them develop their interests and enthusiasms. There are many opportunities for involvement in clubs and societies, community work and charity fund-raising, visits and tours both within the UK and abroad, and for the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme.

As individuals, Hutchesons’ pupils are encouraged to develop confidence, self-discipline, integrity, courtesy and consideration for others. They are part of a large community of learners, where every individual is important. They learn to be thoughtful, articulate and well-read and to have a clear idea about how they want to live their lives beyond school and university.

Scots have always valued education very highly, and for nearly four centuries Hutchesons’ has sent young men and women out into the world secure in the knowledge that they are part of that tradition.

Hutchesons’ prides itself on being an equal opportunities employer and positively encourages applications from suitably qualified and eligible candidates regardless of sex, race, disability, age, sexual orientation, gender reassignment, religion or belief, marital status, or pregnancy and maternity. If you have what it takes, we really want to hear from you.

The Department

The Technology Department consists of the Head of Department, two full-time teachers and a part-time technician. All pupils in S2 study Technology for one lesson per week, during which they explore aspects of the broader technology curriculum, making use of the department’s extensive practical resources. For pupils continuing with the subject, the department offers courses in Engineering Science at National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher, and Graphic Communication at National 5 and Higher. Guided by a strong ethos of inclusion and equality, the department aims to be a place where all learners flourish, and can explore and develop their talents in technology, engineering, and design.

In addition to teaching the core technology curriculum, staff are encouraged to support extra-curricular activities to share their interests and talents with pupils in a setting less constrained by formal assessment programmes. Several extra-curricular clubs and activities run each year, guided by the pupils’ interests and curiosity. Recent activities include Scalextrics for Schools, Design Engineering Club and Greenpower Challenge.

A maker space has been developed and is equipped with a laser cutter, 3D printers and other manufacturing resources. This provides a facility for pupils’ project work across the curriculum. The department enjoys close links with the Art and Drama departments and have supported other departments in using 3D printing and laser cutting to enhance pupil experience. We are also a member school of the Arkwright Engineering Scholarship scheme, and have enjoyed considerable success, for over 20 years during which time more than 30 Hutchesons’ pupils have been selected as scholars.

If you would like an informal discussion about the post, please contact Colin McCormick, Head of Technology, on 0141 423 2933 or via email mccormickc@hutchesons.org.

Candidates should be confident in the delivery of Engineering Science and Graphic Communication courses up to at least National 5 level. It is recognised, however, that some candidates may not have had the opportunity to teach Engineering Science. Training and support will be provided for any candidate who is keen to develop their skills in this area.

All staff are expected to contribute to the wider life of the school, and this could be in the form of assisting with Duke of Edinburgh, Sport or a lunchtime activity.

Please see full JD attached.

Interviews will be held w/c 22 May 2023.

To comply with new regulations under The Education (Scotland) Act 2016, all teachers who commence employment at any Scottish Independent School on or after 1 October 2017 must be registered, or eligible to register, with the General Teaching Council of Scotland (GTCS); either Provisional, Provisional (Conditional) or Full. Further information can be obtained from the GTCS website.

About Hutchesons' Grammar School

Hutchesons’ Grammar School has been a Glasgow institution for almost 400 years and when our pupils leave us in Sixth year they do so knowing they belong to the wider Hutchie community.

A common trait of all Hutchie pupils is the desire to achieve to their best abilities in whichever area their talents lie. This desire to achieve is the heartbeat of Hutchie. We are rightly proud of our reputation for academic excellence. This year 68% of all S5 Highers were awarded grade A. An impressive 40% of S5 pupils received 5 A grades or more and 20% gained 6 Highers at grade A.

However, a Hutchesons’ education offers so much more and many of our pupils excel in the Arts.  Our state of the art, drama studios offer pupils the chance to hone performance skills, while our art pupils regularly make the finals of national competitions. And with over 300 pupils learning musical instruments there are enormous opportunities to play or sing in over 20 orchestras, bands, chamber ensembles and choirs. In four out of the last five years all SQA Higher Music exams were awarded grade A.

Our sports facilities are already among the best in the country and we are now investing over the next three years to improve them further. In the last year our pupils have represented Scotland in Hockey, Athletics, Rowing, Football, Squash and Karate. At Hutchie we believe Fitness and health for life is a habit to begin early.

Learning at Hutchie begins in our new Pre-school class and continues with a strong focus on Literacy and Numeracy throughout Primary. The opportunities for learning in Secondary are vast and we have a robust pastoral care system in place to support our pupils as they journey through school. We also run a large variety of clubs and societies across both the Primary and Secondary. Almost four centuries on from when the school first opened its doors we continue to nurture our Founders’ vision and encourage our pupils to aspire to be honest, resilient, independent, curious, creative and compassionate to others.

Belong and Achieve at Hutchesons’.
