About the role:  The Leigh Academy have been offering support to HI children for over 20 years working primarily with an aural/oral approach, with sign support for some children. We are highly successful and skilled at what we do and now have a rare opportunity to appoint a qualified Teacher of the Deaf to join our provision.  We currently have between 10-15 pupils requiring assistance that are in mainstream classes who the successful candidate will provide intervention for.  This is a fantastic time to join us; the Academy has gone from strength to strength and to continue that development, we are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated teacher to join our team.  Informal visits are gladly welcomed; if you would like to arrange this, please contact the Talent Team directly on 01634 412 240.

Our Hearing Impaired Unit:  The Inclusion Hub at the Leigh Academy includes a dedicated resource base for Hearing Impaired students with severe to profound hearing loss.  The HI students are placed in Tutor Groups alongside their hearing peers. They are taught by the Academy’s subject teachers, working in the mainstream classes for the majority of the time. The Hearing Impaired Resource Base’s specialist staff provide support, working alongside teaching staff, to ensure that the needs of the deaf students are taken into account. Some of the students use Sign Language to support their spoken language so signed communication support is provided. All staff within the HIU have at least BSL Level 1 with some working towards their Level 2. The Academy strives to promote Deaf Awareness within the Academy community as a whole and Deaf Awareness is included in the pastoral programme for all students.  Though the Hearing Impaired students work primarily in their main classes for majority of the time, some lessons take place in the Hearing Impaired Resource Base itself. The rooms are used for specialist teaching, audiology and Speech and Language Therapy.

Our successful candidate with either have the relevant qualification or be on track to complete it in the near future.  We can offer a start date between April - September 2018 depending on your availability and commitments/notice period.

Working for the Leigh Academy:  The Leigh Academy is a secondary school at the heart of the community and our small school model ensures that each and every student gets the personal support and challenge they need to reach their full potential. We can offer you the chance to be part of a strong and collaborative department not only within The Leigh Academy, but within the wider Trust as well.  Full support will be provided and you'll have the tools and environment needed to teach in a way that works for you.  We know that being a teacher can be both challenging and rewarding in equal measures and that you thrive on inspiring young adults and stimulating their curiosity.  At The Leigh Academy we aim to give our teachers the freedom to innovate and inspire our students as we know this is a crucial ingredient to driving great learning outcomes.

Whether you are at the start of your career or an expert teacher we focus on what attributes you will bring to the academy and most importantly what impact you will have on our students.

As a Trust we feel it is important to hire for the right attitude which is why we look for teachers that are enthusiastic, focused and resilient to the day to day pressures that teaching brings.
