Job overview

We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic and passionate Teacher of Theology and Philosophy with excellent subject knowledge and the drive to challenge our committed and capable students.

Our Theology and Philosophy department consists of three subject specialists and is unique in its delivery of the AS level Religious Studies course to all students at KS4 (Y9-11) resulting in students obtaining the qualification by the end of Year 11. The department also offers Philosophy A Level which is a popular subject in the sixth form with numerous students applying for Theology and Philosophy related degrees at top universities in the UK and the USA.

We prepare boys to be theologically and philosophically literate, and to be engaged young people who have the intellectual framework to reflect analytically, critically and hermeneutically – such that they can develop, and confidently articulate, an informed view on important questions, whilst remaining open-minded and humble. Our Theology & Philosophy department serves a diverse, inclusive and thoroughly modern community at Reading School and we believe that outstanding teaching of Religious Studies, Theology & Philosophy is essential to the formation and character of our students.

The department has a long tradition of contributing to co-curricular activities. Every week, boys take part in the Philosophy Society, debating clubs, and a range of religious societies. The department also publishes a student run journal with independent research from boys and colleagues. There are opportunities throughout the year for boys to attend Philosophy Conferences and Philosothons, and to enter national and international essay competitions. Consequently, we are looking for a candidate who can inspire awe and wonder, engage students in life’s biggest questions and who possesses sufficient academic depth to enjoy teaching Religious Studies or Philosophy up to A-Level.

The atmosphere in the department is enthusiastic, collaborative, and supportive. Resources and ideas are generously shared and colleagues are encouraged to experiment with the use of technology and pedagogies.

At Reading School, we have a clear educational philosophy and a deeply rooted commitment to social mobility. In all we do we seek to nurture character and develop academic excellence, and we know that what we do really matters. More than 10% of our Year 7 students come from disadvantaged backgrounds and we are proud of the difference that we make. In 2023, the school was rated the Sunday Times South East State School of the Year.

We are a short walk from central Reading and close to transport links. Reading is a diverse place to live with arts, culture and heritage at the heart of the town.

This is a permanent position starting in September 2024.

Applications must be made via our recruitment portal. Apply here

Reading School is an amazing place to study and work. Our School was founded in 1125 and, through its 900-year history, we have provided world-leading education to tens of thousands of students. With this rich heritage and depth of tradition, it should be no surprise that our academic reputation is second to none. Our Year 13 students are consistently awarded A* to B grades in more than 90% of their A-Level entries, and those sitting GCSEs regularly achieve the very top grades in more than 85% of their courses.

This is not what matters to us most though. We consider these outcomes a necessary, but insufficient measure of a student's education. Education is much more than grades, and learning is much more than retaining information. Education is the business of hope. It sustains society, nurtures culture, inspires innovation and enables the best in humanity.

Education matters, because people matter.

At Reading School, in all we do, we therefore seek to nurture curiosity, inspire service and build character. We promote honesty and community as well as excellence and leadership. We encourage our students to find resilience at the bottom of the ruck, humility on the podium, delight when encountering difference, patience when practice is tough and integrity when no-one is watching.

As a school of character, we believe that your actions can and will make a difference to you and others. We are a values-based organisation that focuses on growth and development. Our core values underpin everything that we do and our staff, both teaching and associate, role model these values.

If you are thinking about joining our team you can find out why it might be the right fit for you. Our team is proud to make a positive impact and strives to put values in to action – excellence, integrity, leadership and community.
