Job overview

Dollar Academy is an independent, co-educational school founded in 1818, with a roll of some 1,300 pupils, of whom around 100 are boarders accommodated in one boys’ and two girls’ boarding houses. Academic standards are high and the school has a reputation for excellence in all fields. The Academy is situated in about 50 acres of grounds, amidst delightful scenery, in the small town of Dollar at the foot of the Ochil Hills, twelve miles east of Stirling, and provides a most attractive working environment.

This is an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic, flexible individual to join the Academy to support the Teacher of Home Economics and, at certain times, the Primary Department.  No formal qualifications are required, but Food Hygiene Certification (or the willingness to obtain this) would be helpful.

Duties will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Assisting the Home Economics teacher with the preparation of ingredients required for Food Technology lessons.
  • Assisting with the weekly food order, the unpacking and storage of weekly food deliveries and organising the stock rotation of food stuffs.
  • The cleaning of food storage and preparation areas in order to maintain required standards of hygiene.
  • Washing and drying of dish towels and the hygienic cleaning down of all work surfaces following each practical food preparation lesson.
  • Carrying out various support roles within the Food Technology classroom under the instruction of the Home Economics teacher.
  • Carrying out some playground supervision in the adjacent primary department.
  • Assisting with primary activities in and around the school.

About Dollar Academy

Dollar Academy was founded in 1818 as the UK’s first co-educational day and boarding school and has been at the heart of Scotland’s educational development for 200 years. The school is the Sunday Times Scottish Independent School of the Year 2018.

Dollar has over 1250 pupils aged 5-18, of whom approximately 75 are boarders. The school’s extensive 70 acre campus is set in a landscape of extraordinary natural beauty at the foot of the Ochil Hills in Central Scotland and is within easy reach of both Edinburgh and Glasgow. Edinburgh airport is conveniently situated and can be reached in 45 minutes.

Dollar is distinguished by its excellence in pastoral care, co-curricular provision and classroom teaching.

Enjoyment of learning lies at the heart of this school and the aim is for all pupils to gain satisfaction from a real commitment to study and participation in the great range of sporting, art and cultural activities on offer.

Dollar pupils undertake internationally recognised SQA examination courses and, in a typical year, over 65% of exam results are at Grade A. Although firmly grounded in the values of Scottish education, Dollar takes a deliberately international approach and the diverse boarding community is at the heart of school life.
