Southway seeks to appoint an inspiring and ambitious Teacher of DT / Food to join our unique and amazing alternative provision which allows students to reset, rebuild and succeed. At Southway, we aim to liberate potential by providing a platform to enable students to maximise their opportunities to learn, develop and progress. The successful candidate will embrace this aim and immerse themselves into our vibrant setting that truly changes outcomes for students.

The successful candidate will equip our young people with the skills and understanding required to create healthy and varied meals. You will introduce, design and deliver the NCFE cookery course (or equivalent), to not only ensure that the fundamental basics of cookery prepare our learners for life beyond the classroom, but to also open the opportunities for learners to pursue FE and a career in the hospitality industry. You will also work closely with the Lead for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme in skill building to help our young people navigate their way into adult life. We receive weekly deliveries from FareShare, the national network of charitable food distributors, allowing students to experiment with new ingredients and sample different cuisines.  This post is suitable for experienced teachers, newly qualified teachers or unqualified teachers and is an exciting opportunity for a caring colleague with a determination to raise aspirations and create positive futures.

Southway is a subsidiary company of the Rodillian Multi Academy Trust, providing alternative and vocational opportunities in education for students at KS3 and KS4, who may otherwise have been excluded from mainstream school. Southway is an independent school, and part of The Rodillian Multi Academy Trust, which provides alternative provision and education for students at KS3 and KS4.

Students who struggle with conventional education or, due to particular challenging and often traumatic events in their lives, sometimes need a period of time in an alternate setting. Many of the students who join Southway have been excluded from mainstream school and perceive that they have failed. The staff at Southway are committed to building positive relationships and promoting resilience in all students so that they have the opportunity to re-engage with education, take ownership of their lives and the choices that they make and ultimately succeed.

Southway is testament to the fact that even the most challenging and complex students can reach their full potential and achieve academic success. A significant majority of our KS3 students successfully re-engage with mainstream schools which is a credit to the way our staff work with students and their families. We have extremely high aspirations for our young people, and we strive to give them the education and life skills that they will need to move on to the next stage of their life.

Southway accepts students throughout the year based on the needs of the referring schools. The relationships at Southway between colleagues and between staff and students, is extremely unique. It is the strength of these relationships that make Southway the amazing provision that it is; everyone works together to raise aspirations and create positive futures. Southway allows students to reset, rebuild and succeed.
