Job overview

Are you a current PE teacher who wants to expand your skills, passion and experience to teach Maths?

Are you ready to take the next step in your teaching career? Whether you're a seasoned educator or a rising star in another subject area, Bedford High School offers a unique opportunity to grow within a core subject and where desired, develop into a future leader.
We believe great teachers change lives—and we’re looking for someone who shares that belief. If you're passionate about making a difference, eager to inspire young minds, and excited by the idea of shaping the future of Maths education, we want to hear from you.
We are seeking to appoint an inspirational and dynamic educator to join our dedicated team from January 2026. This is a permanent, full-time position offering exciting opportunities for professional growth and development. While experience in teaching Mathematics is welcomed, we also encourage applications from non-specialists who are passionate about making a difference in a core subject. For the right candidate, we provide comprehensive training and support to build subject expertise and accelerate career progression.

Are you already an outstanding practitioner and are eager to develop or start your career within Mathematics? Maybe you currently teach a non-core subject and are looking to build a future in the Maths classroom—we’d be excited to support that journey. The ideal candidate will be ambitious, reflective, and committed to progressing into middle or senior leadership. Whether you currently teach Maths or another subject, we welcome your application.
For the right candidate, we will offer:

• Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) courses to build confidence in teaching Maths
• Tailored professional development including a supportive department and mentoring structure to help you thrive

Bedford High School is a community secondary school with approximately 1100 students across two sites. Our last Ofsted inspection was judged Good. Join a school where staff thrive and choose to stay, many of our staff remain with us for a significant part of their careers with staff recognition and rewards of 30 years.

At Bedford, our vision for the Mathematics department is to cultivate a deep appreciation for the subject, encouraging students to engage with and enjoy their mathematical studies. We are committed to ensuring that each student leaves our department with a strong foundation of knowledge and practical skills that highlight the real-world relevance of Mathematics. By fostering a comprehensive understanding of numeracy, we aim to equip all students with the essential tools they need to navigate daily life and succeed in their personal and professional futures. Our goal is to empower every individual with the confidence and competence to use Mathematics effectively, both in academic settings and in the broader world as responsible, capable adults.

In KS3 and KS4, students follow a scheme of work adapted from White Rose Maths, tailored to the needs of Bedford students. This builds on learning from Key Stage 2 and promotes depth of understanding along with problem solving and knowledge retention. At GCSE, we follow a linear two-tier curriculum, assessed through Edexcel. This approach builds on students' prior knowledge, with regular assessments to identify and address any gaps in learning. We ensure that each student is entered for the appropriate tier based on their progress and understanding.

If you feel you have the necessary skills and qualities to undertake this role, we will be delighted to receive your application form. Please complete the application form (we do not accept CVs) and return it to Mrs Claire Taylor, HR Manager, at the school address or by email to recruitment@bedford.wigan.sch.uk.

Early applications are encouraged, and we reserve the right to close the vacancy early and interview before the closing date if a suitable candidate is found.

Shortlisted candidates are also required to complete a self-declaration of any criminal records or information that would make you unsuitable to work with children. When completing application forms all candidates must provide a full employment history and any gaps to be clearly identified. At Bedford High School safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility.
