Teacher (With experience in a Primary model delivery)

The William Henry Smith School is a non-maintained residential special school for boys aged 5-19 experiencing complex Social, Emotional, and Mental Health challenges (SEMH). Our students have a breadth of special educational needs, including learning difficulty and disability. We are a not for profit charitable organisation providing ‘Ofsted Outstanding’ education, therapy and care. Our vision is to ensure opportunities for success are provided through a diverse programme of bespoke individual learning pathways and life skills across the 24-hour curriculum which serve to develop resilience and skills for life-long learning, happiness and an improved quality of life. The school has a strong ethos and culture, built upon firm foundations that underpins all our work on improving quality of life outcomes for our students and their families, through our strong focus on keyworking, developing relationships with students and partnerships with parents and carers.

We are currently looking to appoint an enthusiastic, passionate and resilient teacher to join our experienced and specialist team. The successful candidate will be an excellent practitioner and will teach all core subjects, where there is a strong focus on phonics, communication, language and vocabulary, and English and Maths. The ability to offer a cross curricular mode of delivery and actively teach other areas within the curriculum such as SRE, Modern Britain and PSHE is essential. The successful candidate will be responsible for their own learning group and actively support students’ social, emotional and academic development embedded within the 24-hour curriculum. They will need to plan personalised pathways that meet the individual needs both academically and socially.  The successful candidate will be flexible and adaptable in their approach to make sure they tailor the pathways to achieve the best possible outcomes for students whatever these may be.

The successful candidate will: 

• Be an outstanding practitioner who provides stimulating learning opportunities within a rich and diverse curriculum

• To ensure that Quality of Life underpins all work with students and fellow colleagues

• Be skilled in the ability to deliver within our Primary model covering PSHE, Careers, RSE, Modern Britain and topic-based learning

• Be able to plan, deliver and assess outstanding teaching and learning using proven methods and approaches that enable SEMH students to learn 

• Be able to teach numeracy and literacy basic skills 

• Have a proven record in supporting students to be successful in gaining qualifications that are realistic, yet aspirational for individuals. 

• Use data analysis to inform teaching and learning and whole school improvement

• Be a creative and reflective teacher who inspires confidence in meeting the needs of our students

• Be highly motivated and able to contribute to collaborative working across the school

• Be able to lead and manage staff who work with a group of students in a team around the child approach

• Take an active role in organising special curriculum events

• Need experience of writing high quality long and medium-term curriculum plans, and cross-curricular maps. 

• Have the ability to develop positive and sustainable relationships with students

• Demonstrate resilience, motivation and commitment

• Be able to encourage all students to be actively engaged in their own learning and develop independence

Special School experience is not essential but a willingness to learn and understand the complex needs of our students, drive, aspiration and achievement and the ability to promote quality of life most certainly is.  The post is non-residential and is subject to school teachers’ pay and conditions.
