Job overview

The Acorns School 11-16 Pupil Referral Unit known locally as Acorns is looking to recruit two teachers. A range of academic and vocational courses are offered in-house and externally with partner organisations.

Applications are welcome from appropriately trained colleagues able to offer the following skills/ experience:

One post will involve some teaching of mathematics to KS3 and KS4 pupils. Currently KS3 consists of three mixed groups of years 7-9. They follow the Kangaroo Maths scheme of work. Some of these pupils have special educational needs. At KS4, pupils work at GSCE level however some pupils are taught Functional and Entry Level maths courses as part of an alternative to the alternative programme. Some pupils, who access the alternative programme, are taught at venues external to the school, so there must be a willingness to work off site on some occasions during the week. An ideal candidate would also be able to deliver a practical or vocational based subject to contribute to our KS4 options offer.

A second post would attract either a teacher of Design Technology or a teacher experienced in delivering courses relating to joinery, carpentry etc. This post also requires the teaching of functional literacy and numeracy. At present DT is offered to GCSE. However, candidates would be considered who are experienced in delivering equivalent vocational courses. The school has trialled a land based studies BTEC course and is developing a project which will involve the restructuring of an external area, landscaping and horticulture. A small workshop classroom is in use.

Ideal applicants would need to be positive, flexible and resilient, easily adaptable to change, good team players always willing to support colleagues and share expertise and have a good sense of humour.  Applications are particularly welcome from Teachers who have experience of working in a similar environment. However, if you believe you have the right skills and mind-set please do not hesitate to apply indicating how your strengths can assist the school in moving forward. CPD is given the highest priority and new staff are mentored by established colleagues.

It is strongly advised that you visit the school as you will be able to see its clear strengths and facilities.

The post is subject to enhanced DBS checks. The Acorns School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expects all staff to share this commitment. The post you are applying for is covered by the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (as amended in 2013). If successful you will be required to apply to the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) for a 'disclosure'. Lancashire County Council has a Policy Statement on the Recruitment of Ex-offenders this is available to all applicants upon request.

Visits to school are strongly advised please contact Julie Davis.

Essential: QTS.

Interview date: 17 May 2018.
