Job overview

Can you help narrow the gaps for our students?

In partnership with Teach First, and as part of the government’s new National Tutoring Programme, we are looking to appoint an experienced, passionate and committed teacher or instructor to deliver high quality academic mentoring support to Pupil Premium students.

We believe that every student at Baysgarth School is capable of achieving their very best and we work tirelessly to ensure that barriers to success are addressed and supported.  Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we are determined to narrow gaps in our students’ learning, which the national lockdown may have emphasised.  This is a great opportunity for the right candidate to make a difference and deliver 1:1 and small group interventions in Maths, English, Science, History and/or Geography.

Baysgarth School has transformed to become one of the top performing schools in the Humber region, with five consecutive years of record-breaking results, and the highest four-year Progress 8 average of all local schools.  The phenomenal success of the school has led to us being oversubscribed in Year 7 year on year, which also stems from the first-class facilities we have on site, the outstanding teaching, the superb pastoral care in place and a strong commitment to staff and student mental health and work-life balance.  We are an Ofsted Good school, well on the journey towards Outstanding.  The DfE have concluded that ‘there is no better performing similar school within 75 miles of Baysgarth’ and it is our mission to recruit the most talented staff to continue this progress.

The following qualifications and experience are essential:

• Qualified Teacher Status OR

• A 2:2 Degree or above in an Academic Mentor Curriculum Subject OR

• A 2:2 Degree or above with A-Levels

The following areas of knowledge and experience are desirable:

• Experience of working with students within a secondary school

• Experience of mentoring students

• Using ICT to support students’ learning

• Using differentiation strategies to support a range of learning needs effectively

Baysgarth School is currently an 11-16 comprehensive with approximately 900 pupils on roll.  The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate pride, passion and positivity and a desire to ensure the school has the highest possible reputation in the local community and beyond.

Baysgarth School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.  The successful applicant will be required to apply for enhanced disclosure from the DBS.

If you are inspired by the challenge and responsibility of this opportunity we would like to hear from you.  Further details and an application form can be downloaded from our school website.  If you would like to discuss any aspect of the post, please feel free to contact Andrew North, Assistant Head Teacher at the school.

Please submit completed applications to vacancy@baysgarthschool.co.uk

Closing date for applications is 8.00am on Monday 2nd November 2020

Interviews will be held the same day via telephone

Baysgarth is part of the Riverview Family of Schools which comprises of one secondary school, a primary school, an alternative provision and a teacher training provider.  Find out more about us here!

Over the past decade, Baysgarth has undergone a complete transformation. In summer 2014 our results were the second worst in the Local Authority and were on a three-year downward trend. Since then we have made significant and sustained improvements; in 2015 we were named the most improved school in North Lincolnshire and in 2016 we were in the top five schools in the Humber region, in the top two schools in North Lincolnshire and among the top 10% of schools nationally!  In 2019 our results propelled us into the top 4% of the country for the progress we make with our students.  Our aim to provide the highest quality education for local young people is always our top priority and we continue to strive to improve our offer.

This transformation has come about for a number of reasons. Firstly, we raised our expectations of what our students can achieve and insisted on high standards of behaviour and appearance. Secondly, we focused our staff on the quality of learning taking place in the classroom. We came up with our own Baysgarth Learning Model that underpins our lessons and focused on promoting collaborative learning and Kagan techniques in the classroom. Thirdly, we focused on changing the culture of the school to ensure that we promoted strong teams, encouraged creativity and risk-taking, and praised success.

As a result our classrooms have become vibrant and creative places that are enjoyable for staff and students. We have a very strong teaching staff in all departments which means that any new colleague will be well supported and have the opportunity to continue to grow and develop professionally.

Baysgarth continues to be a Good school that is ‘making good progress on the journey to outstanding’ according to Ofsted, who visited most recently in January 2023.  Inspectors described the school to “have created an inclusive community” where “pupils are well cared for”, “have access to a wide range of enrichment opportunities”, “benefit from high-quality teaching”, along with having access to “a range of experiences that go beyond the national curriculum…experiences that they may not otherwise have had”.  Leadership and governance is strong, with “a clear vision” and “high expectations”.  Baysgarth is consistently one of the top performing schools in the Humber region and it is our mission to recruit the most talented staff to cement our excellent reputation.

Baysgarth is ideally placed at the meeting point of four authorities – North Lincolnshire, North East Lincolnshire, Hull and East Riding. Half of our teaching staff live on the North Bank and travel across the Humber Bridge every day, all of them commenting on the speed and ease of travel with Baysgarth being within 15 minutes of all the West Hull villages and only 20 minutes from Hull city centre. With the area having lower property prices and higher average wages than surrounding areas we are an ideal spot to live and work.

We’re looking for brilliant people to help us build a truly great school, so if this is you we look forward to your application! Feel free to contact us if you want more information or to arrange for a visit.
