Job overview

We are seeking to appoint a Teaching Assistant to join our Learning Support Team from September or sooner if available.

Allestree Woodlands School is a popular and successful 11-18 school, providing high quality education for 1370 students (200+ in the sixth form). The school is situated on the northern edge of the city of Derby in a very pleasant setting overlooking the Kedleston Hall National Trust estate. We work as a great team together and are committed to the continuing professional development of all colleagues.

The successful candidate will join our committed and collaborative Enhanced Learning Team in supporting SEND students across a variety of curriculum areas. The school takes pride in being inclusive as recognised by Ofsted in our most recent inspection. Our team is led by an Assistant Headteacher for Inclusion who is our SENCo, and two Deputy SENCos, one of whom leads on the ERF provision for deaf students.

The faculty assists students with a range of educational needs throughout school. We aim to meet the needs of students with general learning difficulties, autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, deafness, visual impairment and social, emotional and mental health needs.

This post requires a person who understands the needs of SEND students within a secondary school setting. The ability to establish good working relationships with the students and staff is essential. Previous experience of working with SEND students is highly desirable.

The successful applicant will be well supported and have opportunities for continued professional development; we are looking for an individual with potential who is open to learning.

The Teaching Assistant position is full time in term time. 32.5 hours per week for 39 weeks per year. NJC Pay Scale 4 points 7 – 11 £22,369 - £24,054 (pro rata to days and hours worked £16,852 - £18,121 per year). Additional hours as paid overtime may be available for a suitable candidate

As a result of continued and planned growth in numbers along with a commitment to delivering the best we can for our students, we are recruiting.

If you want to join an improving school that puts people and relationships at the heart of decision making, take a look. If you believe in the power of education to change lives and you share our values, we would love to hear from you.

At Allestree Woodlands, we pride ourselves on the warm and friendly atmosphere of the school. Relationships are important and we work to ensure that every student feels safe and happy. We strive for the best achievements for our students and believe that every young person deserves the chance to feel successful at school.

Our school aims are summed up in our mission statement:

Enabling aspiration and achievement for all, through delivery of a knowledge-rich curriculum underpinned by our CORE values:

COURAGE      OPTIMISM       REGARD       ENDEAVOUR

This means that staff at Allestree Woodlands continue to review and improve our curriculum to ensure that knowledge acquisition is clear, coherent and that year on year learning builds on what has gone before so that students feel that they are moving forward and knowing more. As I have said to our students, this acquisition of knowledge gives power and confidence to believe in ourselves and put ourselves in new, unfamiliar, challenging and exciting situations in the future. We seek to equip all of our students to use their knowledge to plan for and achieve their next steps and to be aspirational for their futures. To do this, we must both support and challenge all young people to aspire, to dream of what might lie ahead and to work hard to make those ambitious goals possible. Why settle for less than our very best? When aspiration and hard work are combined, people achieve amazing things.

We are lucky to be a thriving school with a growing intake, a wide level 3 subject offer at post-16, superb extra-curricular opportunities in sports, technology and the creative and performing arts as well as possessing tremendous facilities. If you would like to know more, take a look at our website or arrange a visit. We have open evenings planned for this half-term for prospective students and their parents and you are most welcome to come along and get a feel for what Allestree Woodlands is all about.
