Job overview

Full Time Early Years Teaching Assistant, Somerhill Pre-Prep

The Schools At Somerhill, is a thriving educational establishment of some 600 pupils based in a magnificent Jacobean mansion set in 150 acres of land on the outskirts of Tonbridge. We are looking to appoint a full time Early Years Teaching Assistant for Somerhill Pre-Prep for October, 2019.

Somerhill Pre-Prep is one of the three Schools at Somerhill. It is a co-educational school, comprising of an Early Years department and Key Stage 1 department.  There are approximately 200 pupils, ranging in age from rising 3 to 7 years.  There are currently just over 30 full and part-time staff, including Learning Support Assistants and specialist teachers.  Somerhill Pre-Prep provides families the opportunity to start their child’s learning in a school environment prior to statutory school age.  Our Early Years department comprises of two Pre-School classes, offering a mixed age range environment for Rising 3 and Rising 4 year olds and three Reception classes.  There are three Year 1 and three Year 2 classes.  We are a mixed ability school and pride ourselves on developing each child to their full potential, both academically and socially.

Somerhill Pre-Prep is an IAPS school and the majority of our children continue their learning at one of the two Somerhill prep schools.  The boys can join Yardley Court, which currently has 250+ pupils, at Year 3 and they will stay until Year 6 (11+) or Year 8 (13+ Common Entrance).  The girls can join Derwent Lodge which currently has 135+ pupils aged 7 to 11 years. Overall, there are 600+ pupils here on site at Somerhill.  The schools are all based in a stunning Jacobean mansion set in 150 acres of beautiful parkland. You will be hard-pressed to find a more glorious setting for a school!  Somerhill Pre-Prep classrooms are all located around a courtyard and this offers a secure setting for the children. Teaching and learning also takes place in the diverse outdoor environment surrounding the building.  As a result of a strong building programme over the last ten years, we also benefit from excellent facilities including: the SPP outdoor play area, Music Building and fantastic sports amenities.  More details of all three schools can be found on our website: www.somerhill.org.

All members of staff here at Somerhill contribute to a very busy Clubs and Activities programme that takes place both during lunchtimes and after school. Staff are welcome to offer any activity that will generate enthusiasm from our pupils.

Somerhill is set in a stunning 400-year-old Jacobean mansion surrounded in 150 acres of beautiful parkland. You will be hard-pressed to find a more glorious setting for a school! We have excellent facilities including a multi-purpose sports hall, astroturf, indoor swimming pool complex and purpose-built music suite to name just a few.

Ours is a mixed-ability school. Teachers really invest in the children and know them well, with lessons carefully planned to cater to all abilities.

We have very bright and capable pupils and send more pupils to grammar schools each year than any other local school. Destinations include Tonbridge Grammar School, The Judd, and Skinners. Some pupils are awarded scholarships at independent schools such as Tonbridge, Sevenoaks, Walthamstow Hall and Sutton Valance at 11+/13+.

We also cater to children who find aspects of their learning more challenging and currently approximately 40 pupils receive additional support.

Located just to the south of Tonbridge, we are readily accessed by a slip road off the A21.
