Marchbank Free School was established in 2013 in County Durham for children between the ages of four and 11 who have social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs. Students from Darlington and the surrounding area are eligible to attend the school. Currently there are around 38 pupils enrolled. The school believes learning comes early when it is offered to a child that is developmentally ready.

Principal

Mandy Southwick BA (Hons) QTS N.P.Q.H

Values and vision

Marchbank Free School educates children with SEMH needs using the Steiner approach. Teachers give children the chance to use their imagination and be artistic. The pupils are able to listen to stories, take part in dramas and listen to rhymes. Staff follow the Massage in Schools Programme, which teaches children to give their peers massages in order to create a happy and friendly environment.

The classes are small, which allows the teacher and teaching assistant to nurture and educate to each child’s specific needs. Children are taught English, numeracy, computing, physical education and foreign languages. On Friday afternoons, children have the chance to cook, sing or make crafts.

Ofsted report

“Pupils thrive at Marchbank. The calm, caring atmosphere, high expectations, excellent relationships between staff and pupils and good teaching ensure all pupils settle in quickly and achieve well from their very low starting points. Pupils who had been excluded from or regularly isolated from their peers in their previous schools, relish their lessons. They achieve and behave well, mixing with their friends at carefully supervised social times across the day.”
