Job overview

Are you committed and passionate about making a difference to the life chances of our students?  Are you looking for an interesting, varied and challenging opportunity?

We are seeking an enthusiastic teaching assistant to join our team.  The role will include a variety of activities with good opportunities for progression and development.  You will work closely with teaching staff to support groups of students in school years 6 to 11.  You are likely to work very closely with one group and their teacher, but will also work with a wide range other pupils of different ages.  Depending on your interest, knowledge and skills, you may also work with our SEN intervention team.

Northfield is a Special School for pupils with specific difficulties; pupils are placed here because they have Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) difficulties that prevent them from making good progress in a mainstream setting.  In general, the behaviour of our pupils is excellent and is always well managed by our staff, but individual pupils can be challenging at times and you will need to be robust and resilient when this occurs; ensuring that you uphold the policies of the school with the support of other staff.

We will welcome your application if you are:

  • An experienced teaching assistant looking for a career change into SEMH and/or Special Needs
  • Seeking a long-term position within a highly supportive special school
  • Interested in a gap-year position and looking to gain experience within a school setting
  • Are a prospective teacher, considering an assessment only route to QTS

Visits to the school are welcomed and encouraged.  This is a small and highly specialist school with loyal and dedicated staff.  We are proud of our school, and of the education and opportunities that we provide for our pupils.  You will play a critical part of a strong teaching community that will value your contribution to the school.

Application Procedure

Northfield School and the Local Authority are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. We will ensure that all our recruitment and selection practices reflect this commitment.

All successful candidates will be subject to Disclosure and Barring Service checks along with other relevant employment checks prior to commencement of this post.

Completed application forms (CLICK HERE) should be emailed to jobs@northfieldschool.co.uk by noon on Monday 05 Jun 2017 (Noon).

Closing date:      Monday 5th June 2017 (Noon)
Interviews:         Monday 12th June 2017

Northfield School is a Special School for boys, aged between 11 – 18, with Social, Emotional and Mental Health Needs. The school is situated in Oxford and accepts students from across the whole county, with approximately 60 students on roll.

Our students have a wide range of additional needs including Autistic Spectrum Conditions (ASC), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Conduct Disorders, Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), Speech and Language Difficulties and Specific and Moderate Learning Difficulties.

Northfield School facilitates the social and emotional needs and academic development of students through a personalised approach that ensures all students are supported, valued and challenged. We offer a tailored curriculum which is delivered by a specialised, dedicated and experienced staff team. This approach enables students at Northfield School to develop academically, socially, emotionally and behaviourally.

Northfield School's ethos is a child centred approach, designed to provide every student with the structure, security and success required to build confidence and self-esteem in preparation for adult life. Northfield School promotes excellence in all things to inspire and challenge our students so that they leave proud of their achievements.

In short, our children and young people are respected, supported and encouraged.

Pupils are taught in small groups, currently there are typically seven pupils in a group with each class benefitting from a teacher and a teaching assistant. As a result, the relationships between adults and our pupils tend to be very strong and trusting, which enables pupils to feel valued and to develop self-worth. The curriculum is broad and well-balanced, with all pupils receiving tuition on all National curriculum subjects at both key stages, including a range of options for pupils in KS4. In addition to the in-school offer, a small number of pupils benefit from our close links with a local college. We are currently recruiting for new leadership posts in English and maths to further strengthen our curriculum offer in all years, and to raise attainment at KS4.
