Job overview

Train as a Mathematics Teacher at Dulwich College

September 2021

We are looking to recruit both career changers and recent graduates to train as mathematics teachers.

Dulwich College is the South London Hub of the National Maths & Physics SCITT, a new school centred teacher training programme that partners the state and independent school sectors and provides subject specific mathematics training. Trainees complete a year's teacher training and are awarded both qualified teacher status (QTS) and a PGCE. Trainees undertake a main school placement at either Dulwich College or one of our partner schools (both state and independent) across London. They are assigned a mentor in their host school and attend a full day's formal training every Wednesday at Dulwich College, designed and delivered by leading mathematics practitioners. The course is highly subject specialised: trainees receive 14.5 days of mathematics specific training over the year. In the second or third school term, trainees undertake a six-week second placement at a contrasting school.

Trainees are awarded a tax-free £24,000 government bursary for the training year. There are also more generous scholarships available from the Institute of Mathematics (IMA), which many of our current trainees have successfully applied for. For trainees who left education some time ago, there are subject knowledge enhancement courses of various lengths available, for which trainees receive payment for completing.

Entry requirements for candidates are British citizenship and a first- or second-class bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject, in addition to a love of their subject and a desire to work with young people.

Online taster sessions (comprising a full introduction to our course, discussion of life as a teacher and video clips of classroom teaching and our SCITT training sessions) can be booked at https://getintoteaching.education.gov.uk/school-experience or by contacting James Rosslyn-Smith in the Mathematics Department at rosslyn-smithjh@dulwich.org.uk. Applications can be submitted either via UCAS or at https://www.gov.uk/apply-for-teacher-training between now and July 2021. The course start date is September 2021.

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. A DBS Disclosure is required to Enhanced level. Charity 1150064

Dulwich College is an academically selective independent boys’ school in south east London with a tradition of inspired teaching, genuine scholarship and co- curricular breadth. We are a school committed to providing a wealth of opportunities to pupils and colleagues within a nurturing, equitable and caring ethos.

There are approximately 1,630 boys on the school roll, of whom some 130 are boarders. There is a strong history of diversity at the College, reflecting that of south east London generally, but also that we are committed to an expanding programme of means-tested access. Currently about 30% of pupils have such an award but we hope to increase this to 50% in the coming years.

Situated in 70 acres, yet only 12 minutes by train from central London, the College enjoys outstanding academic, co-curricular and sporting facilities, including The Laboratory, a RIBA National Award-winning Science and Arts building. There has also been an extensive refurbishment of its iconic Grade II* listed Barry Buildings and surrounding landscaping.

Further information about the College can be found on our website www.dulwich.org.uk.
