Train as a Modern Languages Teacher at Dulwich College

August 2021

We are seeking strong language graduates, including those looking to change career and native speakers, to train as secondary school modern foreign language teachers.

Dulwich College is leading the training of modern language teachers in London. As the lead school of the South London hub of the National Modern Languages SCITT, Dulwich College co-ordinates teacher training with a network of state and independent schools across London.  The NML SCITT is a national teacher training provider dedicated solely to modern languages. It was set up by the government in response to the shortage of MFL teachers in the profession and is a partnership between state and independent schools across England. The course is taught by MFL experts and involves training at university and at the SCITT’s Day School at Dulwich College, whilst providing hands-on experience in the classroom through two contrasting school placements in our partner schools. Dulwich has been involved from the outset and has a strong track record of recruiting talented, enthusiastic linguists who have a passion for teaching.

Through this one-year course, you will gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), both of which are nationally and internationally recognised. The PGCE will be provided by Sheffield Hallam University and includes 60 credits at level 7 (Masters’ level) which are transferable.

We are looking for candidates who have the potential to be an outstanding teacher. You must be able to demonstrate extensive subject knowledge in your chosen language or be a native speaker. A good honours degree or a recognised equivalent qualification with a high level of fluency in at least one modern language is needed.

Successful applicants can apply for a bursary of up to £10,000 (subject to eligibility and DfE announcement every year) from the English government, and a Student Loan if needed. There are subject knowledge enhancement courses of various lengths available if your language skills need updating.

Information about taster days at Dulwich College (comprising lesson observations and an introduction to the course) and the application and selection process can be found on the website https://www.nationalmodernlanguages.com or by contacting Catherine Juyol on JuyolC@dulwich.org.uk. Applications are submitted via UCAS between now and July 2021. The course start date is August 2021.

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. A DBS Disclosure is required to Enhanced level. Charity 1150064.

Dulwich College is an academically selective independent boys’ school in south east London with a tradition of inspired teaching, genuine scholarship and co- curricular breadth. We are a school committed to providing a wealth of opportunities to pupils and colleagues within a nurturing, equitable and caring ethos.

There are approximately 1,630 boys on the school roll, of whom some 130 are boarders. There is a strong history of diversity at the College, reflecting that of south east London generally, but also that we are committed to an expanding programme of means-tested access. Currently about 30% of pupils have such an award but we hope to increase this to 50% in the coming years.

Situated in 70 acres, yet only 12 minutes by train from central London, the College enjoys outstanding academic, co-curricular and sporting facilities, including The Laboratory, a RIBA National Award-winning Science and Arts building. There has also been an extensive refurbishment of its iconic Grade II* listed Barry Buildings and surrounding landscaping.

Further information about the College can be found on our website www.dulwich.org.uk.
