Job overview

Full time-Required for September 2023

Chigwell School is seeking to recruit either a career changer or a recent graduate to train as an English teacher.

This is an exciting opportunity for an English graduate to qualify with QTS as a specialist English teacher. Our training is fully-funded with close mentorship and support. It is flexible in that trainees have the option to take the PGCE with QTS or QTS-only path. As a trainee at Chigwell you will have a competitive starting salary, approximately £20,000 for this role, and all teacher training costs will be met. In addition Chigwell offers on-site accommodation (if required) and other benefits such as free lunch (term time only) and the use of the School’s new sports centre and gym, which is opening in Autumn 2023. Once trained, many teachers continue with us for their ECT years and beyond, including into positions of responsibility, with pay increases to match.

English at Chigwell is taught in a way that combines academic rigour with an enthusiastic and flexible approach offering a lively experience of English for the students within the clear framework provided by the Scheme of Work. A good deal of emphasis is placed on literature and both written and oral communication skills. The department’s public examination record throughout is excellent. It is felt vital, however, to promote enjoyment of the subject well beyond the syllabus and the department is always looking to strengthen and expand an already busy extra-curricular programme.

The department is also responsible for all debating and public speaking. Drama is a considerable strength of the School, and while there is a separate Drama department there is inevitably an overlap with English, not least in organising visits to the theatre. We also work closely with the librarians, with whom we share the promotion of reading throughout the School.

We are located in the picturesque village of Chigwell just 10 miles from central London and on the Central Line. Close to the edge of Epping Forest, we enjoy over 100 acres of beautiful grounds and excellent facilities.

For further details about the school and an application form please visit our website https://www.chigwell-school.org/about-us/vacancies/. Applicants should complete the application form and email to the Human Resources Manager at hr@chigwell-school.org

The Head of English, Emma Rea, will be happy to answer any questions; she can be contacted through the School by telephone 020 8501 5701 or by e-mail to erea@chigwell-school.org

Applications will be considered as they are received so early applications are encouraged. Please note that the School reserves the right to appoint prior to the closing date.

Chigwell School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. Applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening including checks with past employers and DBS.

Values and vision

Chigwell School’s motto is: “aut viam inveniam aut faciam”, a Latin phrase which means literally, “Either I shall find a way or I will make one". In-keeping with this, the school wants its students to develop a “determined, independent spirit, taking responsibility for themselves, their relationships with others, and the world around us”.

The school defines its mission as aiming to cultivate a learning community that aspires to excellence in all aspects of life, including: spiritual intellectual, moral, cultural, social and emotional aspects.

Chigwell School aims to provide a rounded education in the broadest sense, encouraging pupils to develop and discover talents and interests across and beyond the curriculum in order to help them to play a full part in the life of the school, and go on to make a positive contribution to the world.

The school hopes to be a community in which pupils develop a love of learning and are challenged to think critically, and with creative curiosity, for themselves.

ISI report

“Pupils’ personal development is excellent throughout the school. They are tolerant and appreciate non-material aspects of life. Pupils display maturity and they respect others, regardless of background or personal characteristics. They have highly developed cultural awareness and a developed understanding of British characteristics.”
