Trainee Teacher of Music

Required for September 2024 - Salary: £25,831

“The school’s vision that ‘it is not enough for young people to be loved, they must know that they are loved’ permeates the school’s culture” Ofsted May 2017.

Would you like to train as a teacher, whilst being paid to do so?

In conjunction with Xavier Teach SouthEast, St John Bosco College offers the opportunity to gain Qualified Teacher Status alongside paid employment as a trainee over the course of one school year.

SJBC is a successful 11-18 mixed Catholic comprehensive, graded Good by Ofsted in October 2022 and Outstanding by the Archdiocese of Southwark in 2019. We have a strong track record of training teachers, many of whom have gone on to join us as permanent members of staff.

This salaried School Direct scheme is offered in collaboration with Xavier Teach SouthEast, who provide a full programme of training leading to QTS. Trainees will spend one day a week at their London hub, with the remaining time spent in the classroom at SJBC. Trainees receive regular observation and guidance from an experienced subject mentor.

The programme runs over one school year; successful candidates will begin training in September 2024 and gain QTS in Summer 2025. However, it may be possible for candidates to take up a position from Easter 2024, prior to the start of formal training.

The starting salary for this post is £25,831. An enhanced salary may be available in recognition of relevant prior experience.

SJBC is an exciting and rewarding place to work; our warm Salesian ethos is evident in all we do, and staff describe working here as being “part of a family.” If you have a passion for your subject, an enthusiasm for working with young people, and are ambitious to get your teaching career off to a flying start, we would be very pleased to hear from you.

The school is happy to accommodate visits from prospective candidates, or to arrange a telephone conversation to discuss the programme further; please contact recruitment@sjbc.wandsworth.sch.uk to express your interest.

Applications will be considered as they are received; therefore, early applications are encouraged.

We reserve the right to appoint before the closing date if we find a suitable candidate.

Closing date: 9.00 am, Monday 15 April 2024

Interviews: TBC

CVs are not accepted.

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.

This post is subject to a DBS check.

St John Bosco College is located in the heart of Battersea a short distance from Clapham Junction and Battersea Bridge.  We are an 'outstanding' Catholic School (Section 48 inspection June 2019) rated were 'good' by Ofsted in our most recent inspection (October 2022).

At St John Bosco College we believe that there should be no limit on what our pupils can achieve and we expect everyone who joins us to aim high and always do their best. With a broad and balanced curriculum, excellent teaching, a modern purpose-built school and a caring, nurturing ethos; we provide an excellent environment where all of our pupils can reach their full potential.

“Saint John Bosco is a Catholic college, but admits pupils from a wide range of faiths and cultures and these differences are embraced and celebrated” Ofsted

We want our pupils to work hard but also enjoy life in school.  We provide many enrichment activities; sporting, work experience, cultural and charitable; for our pupils to learn and grow beyond the confines of the classroom.  We believe that these opportunities enable our pupils to grow and develop into well-rounded young men and women who will leave here fully equipped for life beyond school.

“Staff know each and every pupil and relationships are consequently highly positive.” Ofsted

Our identity as a Roman Catholic school and our school’s distinctive Salesian ethos is based on St John Bosco’s vision that ‘it is not enough for every child to be loved… they must know that they are loved’. We provide strong pastoral support and a high level of care for every student, regardless of their background.  We are a community where everyone is highly valued as an individual.

“Pupils mix well in this harmonious environment and benefit from personalised support and guidance” Ofsted

Whilst we are justifiably proud of our school and of the achievements of the young people who have already studied here we are equally excited about the future and the potential of the young people joining our school to achieve great things in the years ahead.

“The school’s vision that ‘it is not enough for young people to be loved, they must know that they are loved’ permeates the school’s culture” Ofsted
