We are an 11-18 academy, based in the cathedral city of Wakefield in West Yorkshire, near Leeds, with a curriculum designed to stretch and enrich our students’ experience. Our relentless focus on learning ensures everyone has the right to learn.

In 2021 we completed a new multi-million pound development, the highlight of which was a new 17 classroom teaching block which is home to music and drama rooms, art rooms, a main hall and a dining room. The Humanities Department at Outwood Academy Hemsworth

The Humanities department comprises 8 teachers including a Head of Faculty, a Second in Faculty, a Vice Principal, experienced teaching staff as well as ECT teachers. Most humanities lessons are taught in a dedicated building, with each teacher having their own classroom base. The building has its own staff room with kitchen facilities, as well as meeting space and rooms for intervention work. We also have a dedicated space for post-16 students to work in. Classrooms are fully equipped with interactive televisions and visualisers to support teaching and learning. The continuing professional development of staff is important here at Outwood Academy Hemsworth. Staff have access to a wide range of CPD, including a 6 day History Matters and Geography Matters course, as well as a number of one-off sessions focusing on teaching strategies and curriculum. 

KS3 is engaging and designed to help broaden the horizons of our students. Students are challenged to learn about physical and human processes and the interaction between them. Enquiries include ‘How am I linked to climate change’ and ‘Is tourism a blessing or a curse?’ We are currently increasing the amount of GIS at KS3 and post-Covid, we have big plans for KS3 fieldwork to increase the opportunities available to our students. 

Geography is an increasingly popular option subject at GCSE where we follow the AQA specification. The units we cover are Paper 1: Natural Hazards, Living World, Coasts and Rivers; Paper 2: Urban, Economic Change; Resource Management and Water; Paper 3: Pre-Release and Fieldwork.

We work hard to ensure we reduce workload on staff, allowing more time in the classroom to put our vision of students first, raising standards and transforming lives into practice.

All academies within the Outwood Family have gained the IQM Inclusive Schools Award with 18 having Centre of Excellence status and one holding Flagship status.
