Job overview

Job Purpose:

To enable students to make informed decisions about career paths and opportunities available. To provide advice and information for parents, staff and students on university admissions requirements and processes and procedures. The position is intended to be proactive as opposed to reactive. The Counsellor, whilst having a whole school role in terms of providing information, guidance and workshops on careers and university admissions processes and procedures, would predominantly work in the secondary school. 


Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Maintain and develop a careers library with university brochures and catalogues.
  • Be responsible for University applications.
  • Train staff to deliver a series of lessons to enable students to write effective personal statement for their university applications.
  • Plan a series of lessons that will enable students to discover their strengths and weaknesses.
  • Help students identify possible careers.
  • Run various aptitude and language testing (Centigrade, IElTS, PSat, Sat etc) for Grades 6-12.
  • Conduct personality inventories with senior students for the purpose of obtaining a clear picture of strengths and weaknesses and possible career paths.
  • Advise all students on career matters not just Grades 10-12. 
  • Interview students and monitor their application progress ensuring that they meet all deadlines.
  • Plan and arrange numerous university visits to the IAA.
  • Provide information for students on upcoming career fairs and university open days and visits.
  • Provide information and assistance to students in making application/s to universities, both within and outside of Jordan.
  • Provide advice and support for students in subject choices. 
  • Work with the Coordinators on providing information days/sessions/classes for students on career planning, career options and developing skills.
  • Deliver workshops and/or classes/information sessions on making application to universities including tuition on procedures and processes on completing university application forms ( eg UCAS, Common Application).
  • Provide ongoing assistance and follow up with students and parents on university applications, including monitoring any online programmes related to applications, testing.
  • Coordinate the administration necessary for external testing within the school including SATs, PSATs, IELTS, aptitude testing, ISA.
  • Check all student’s details and examination results.
  • Maintain a data base of information on student grades, acceptances into universities.
  • Train and advise tutors on how to write letters of recommendation.
  • Assist the DP Coordinator in gathering data such as predicted grades. 
  • Work with the DP Coordinator on transcripts.
  • Maintain an up to date data base of information on local and international university applications, courses , enrolments procedures and processes as well as course requirements.
  • Develop and maintain a database on graduates university acceptances and degrees to be studied.
  • Consult and advise parents on student options / careers / university applications.
  • Organize College Fairs, College Speakers, and Career Fairs for students in the Academy ( as appropriate to grade level).
  • Provide individual and group counseling services to students. 
  • Follow up individual and group counseling to monitor student progress.
  • Recommend to the administration programmes and initiatives that enhance student career options, choices and knowledge.
  • Provide career path counseling for staff within the school.
  • To provide an annual action plan for career counseling service within the school.


Qualifications:

College Counsellor should have:

  • Master’s degree and certification in Secondary School Career Counseling.
  • Two to five years’ teaching experience with at least three years secondary (accredited schools preferred).
  • Experience with online career counseling programmes. 
  • Knowledge of admissions procedures for universities based in USA,UK, Europe and Australasia.
  • Good working knowledge of IB programmes


College Counsellor should also possess:

  • Strong communication skills. 
  • Good interpersonal skills in interacting with students, parents and staff.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team.
  • A strong interest to help others and the ability to inspire respect, trust and confidence.
  • Computer and IT skills
