University & Career Counsellors coordinate the College and University application process and Career Education pathways for the Upper School students in Grades 9-12. Working as a team, the University and Career Counsellors must remain current with trends in University and College admissions by maintaining and cultivating new relationships with tertiary destinations around the world. Each University and Career Counsellor is aligned with a Personal/Social/Emotional Counsellor to serve the counselling needs for approximately½ of the Upper School student body. The counsellors work closely with the administrative team to help 10th graders choose the most appropriate courses for their last two years.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Develops and implements curriculum in the areas of career exploration, university and college guidance
  • Develops Advisory sessions relating to College and University Guidance and counselling
  • Works collaboratively with colleagues on the Upper School Counselling team
  • Maintains student/counselling records and correspondence relevant to college guidance/admission
  • Meets with ZIS families to support their children with the University application and post-secondary school planning
  • Writes school recommendations, coordinates teacher information
  • Liaises with students and teachers about projected scores for Grade 12 students
  • Plans and organizes college information sessions (approx. 100 colleges/universities visit per year)
  • Hosts annual College Fair
  • Provides information for students regarding ACT, SAT, SAT Subject tests, LNAT, UKCAT, Cambridge Assessments, TOEFL tests and SAT Prep
  • Participates in academic advising during course selection process in Grade 10
  • Updates appropriate information for the ZIS website
  • Acts as a Maia learning site coordinator to streamline the dissemination of information relevant to the college selection and admissions process
  • Establishes relationships and networks with other professionals in the field and maintains a list of consultants
  • Assists in creation of annual School Profile for Colleges and Universities
  • Leads regular Counsellor corner sessions for parents
  • Provides ongoing updates to documentation
  • Creates and administers annual feedback survey to students at the end of senior year
  • Assists Development Office in tracking and communicating with ZIS alumni
  • Assists in deferral years for students taking a gap year or military service

 

Requirements:

  • Minimum 5 years experience in college counselling in an inclusive (open academic admissions) International School
  • Strong knowledge of the 1B Diploma and AP academic pathways
  • Strong knowledge of UK, US and European university admission requirements
  • Highly effective communicator with parents, students, teachers, administrators, admissions officers
  • Certification in school counselling
  • Experience in personal/social counselling would be an asset
