Federation University is seeking an outstanding leader as its next Vice-Chancellor and President. The Vice-Chancellor will represent Federation within the community and at the highest levels of government and industry, while leading the university’s academic excellence, financial growth and sustainability.


Celebrating 150 years in 2020 – Federation is one of the oldest universities in Australia through its predecessor institutions and became established as Federation University in 2014. Our position as a young university with the knowledge and experience of history creates a unique opportunity for the right leader to shape Federation’s identity and position in the higher education sector in the coming years. 


The university has more than 23,000 students across the largest number of campuses of any Victorian university. This includes a campus in the growth corridor of Melbourne’s south-east, three regional Victorian campuses and a growing Brisbane base.  A network of onshore partner providers in Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide, and offshore partners in Malaysia, Hong Kong and China provide quality programs for international students. As a dual-sector university, Federation is also uniquely positioned to provide pathways from vocational education and skills training into higher education.


Candidates will have demonstrated intellectual distinction, the professional standing required to lead a university, and proven strategic leadership within an academic organisation. They will have an inclusive, accessible and transformative leadership style, with exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, together with exemplary personal qualities of integrity, intellect, presence and good judgement. They will have proven ability to build successful local, national and international partnerships, and a demonstrated ability to influence and shape opinion on tertiary and vocational education and public policy issues.
