Job overview

The goal is clear - to be a Founding Vice-Principal of an exemplary UTC which develops students with the skills and expertise needed to flourish in the 21st century Transport Engineering and Construction industries.

The Sir Simon Milton Westminster University Technical College will open in September 2017 in the heart of London’s West End. It will be a flagship for technical skills education offering 550 young people between 14 and 19, the opportunity to join a new generation of engineers, designers, technicians and project managers to build Britain’s infrastructure. It will be the only central London UTC and its catchment spans the M25.

The Sir Simon Milton Foundation is co-founder, with the University of Westminster and Network Rail. The UTC is named in honour of Sir Simon, London’s visionary leader whose commitment to education and employment for young people underpins our partnership.

The UTC’s unrivalled Employer Alliance, led by Network Rail, includes Land Securities, BT Fleet, Alstom, Sir Robert McAlpine and TfL.  The University of Westminster is the lead educational sponsor, supported by City of Westminster College and St Marylebone School for Girls.  Strong support from City of Westminster Council ranges from land for the newly designed building in Victoria, to officer expertise and Mayoral direction.

The founding Principal has been in post since April 2016. The Vice-Principal will be appointed in October to take up post 1st January 2017.  This is a unique opportunity to work with the Principal, to recruit students, shape and recruit the staff team, shape the pastoral structure and finalise the curriculum offer, integrating innovative business challenges.   It is a broad, career-changing role, requiring enthusiasm, flexibility and determination.

The Vice-Principal will be responsible for promoting a culture of achievement and excellence, both within their subject and throughout the UTC. Applicants should be outstanding classroom practitioners fully committed to delivering the highest standards, with the leadership skills to foster team development and promote evaluation and reflection.
