High Tech Academy in Almaty, Kazaskhstan have asked Teacherhorizons to lead the search for an inspiring Vice Principal to join their growing international school to start in August 2019. This is a great opportunity to support a multicultural team in the creation of an inspirational and transformative learning community.

Opportunity

High Tech Academy is a private trilingual (Russian, Kazakh and English) Project Based Learning school, following a project-based curriculum in middle and high school and Finnish pedagogical approach in primary school.
The successful candidate will be responsible for leading, supervising, and developing a high-functioning team of educators, as well as developing a caring community within the school. There will also be responsibility for curriculum and instructional Leadership with a focus on student learning and success.

High Tech Academy

The school is currently relatively small, but growing organically and when they move into their new purpose built facilities in September 2020, they anticipate growth from approximately 300 to 700 students. The majority of the students are Kazakh.

The Primary years are focused on student-led learning, maintaining their intellectual, mental, and physical well-being whilst following the integrity of the curriculum.

The secondary years have a project based learning method in which students gain knowledge and skills through the process of long-term research and searching for answers to cognitive and complex questions,  building connections between the student, school, society and the real world.

Almaty, Kazakhstan

Almaty, a beautiful green city, is the major commercial and cultural centre of Kazakhstan, as well as its largest, most populous and most cosmopolitan city. It is located in the mountainous area of southern Kazakhstan in the foothills of the Trans-lli-Alatau. There is lots going on with many cafes, bars, restaurants and cultural events. Getting out of the city leads you to some stunning nature, hiking, camping and skiing. Life is very cheap and the Kazakh people are very hospitable and warm.

The Opportunity: benefits and further details

The successful candidate will be a dedicated educator with at least 5 years of experience in teaching and administration (ideally with a Masters degree to support this). You will be able to initiate change and embrace new ideas in a fast-paced, dynamic, and rapidly-changing environment. You must have a positive attitude and strong desire to move a school forward towards greater success. Within this remit, Curriculum Development and UbD (understanding by design) or PBL (project based learning), as well as spoken and written Russian would be an advantage.

Kazakhstan's climate is extremely continental and very dry. It has pleasant summers and cold winters. Great skiing opportunity is only 20 minutes from the city centre at Shymbulak Mountain Resort and there are many wonderful parts of Kazakhstan to explore. There are also opportunities from Almaty to travel to other countries: Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Turkmenistan are 1-2 hours flight, and Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Russia, China, Mongolia and Dubai are 4-6 hours flight. Almaty can be as cheap as many South American and Eastern European cities. It is a wonderful gateway to the undiscovered and distinctive country.
