Job overview

ABOUT ELAM

ELAM is a world-class 16-19 Academy which opened in September 2014. ELAM offers young people everything that they will need to lead successful lives within the music, games design and film and television sectors.

Our vision is to better the creative industries of tomorrow. We believe this can be achieved by increasing the access routes into those industries for talented young people. The creative industries in the UK continue to do well and are currently worth £92 Billion to the economy, while growing at more than double the speed of the wider economy. However, unlike many other industries, it is not always clear how to get into these jobs and therefore there is often lack of diversity within these sectors. Increasing the access routes to everyone will therefore increase the quality of talent and the continued growth of the sector long term.

ELAM seeks to achieve this by providing industry standard courses for our trainees in Music, Games Design and Film and Television. We have partnered with sector leading organisations including YouTube, Universal Music and Creative Assembly to devise a curriculum that will develop the future leaders of these sectors by meeting the relevant knowledge, skills and cultural demands. In addition, all trainees at ELAM undertake a study of Maths and English as we identified the skills provided by these subjects, such as written and oral communication, problem solving, data analysis and research are the key traits of the current leaders of these fields.

We had our first full Ofsted inspection in May 2017 and received a grading of Outstanding in every category and while this is a huge achievement and something that we are immensely proud of, we are also still a long way from meeting our vision. There is still a lot of work to do and as a school we are restless in the pursuit of achieving this.

Please do read the person specification below as it should give you a good summary of what life at ELAM is like and what to expect. ELAM is an exciting place to work and probably different from many other institutions. Our staff culture is incredibly important to us and is one of our key strengths. This is held together by a shared approach to working really hard but also an acknowledgement that our work and relationships as a team should and can be fun.

If you’re excited by this then please do apply as you will get the chance to come in and meet the team and get a feel for what we do in person.

ABOUT THE ROLE

ELAM is looking to appoint a dynamic and inspirational leader to play a central role in ELAM achieving its vision by ensuring all trainees meet their potential.

The successful candidate will join ELAM in September 2018. They will be a central figure in the senior leadership team and will assume overall strategic accountability for the teaching, learning, assessment as well as the personal development, behaviour, welfare and safety of the trainees here at ELAM. The successful candidate will also have a small teaching load at ELAM, they do not however necessarily need to be a specialist in one of our core subjects (see below).

The successful candidate will therefore have proven experience in managing and leading teams and individuals to successful outcomes. They will also have demonstrated experience in devising and implementing whole school systems and processes which have had a positive impact on the students the which involve multiple staff members. They will be comfortable with managing large and complex workloads and communicating clearly to multiple stakeholders.

As a key member of the senior leadership team, the Vice Principal will be required to make key strategic decisions using multiple sources of qualitative and quantitative information. The candidate will therefore be required to have a strong knowledge and understanding of managing and utilising data to drive decision making.

ELAM’s industry ethos and Values will influence the work of all of our teachers as they construct powerful and relevant learning experiences that are ‘plugged-in’ to the sector. The Vice Principal should therefore have an interest in developing contexts within the professional industries for developing challenging and relevant curriculums.

To apply please submit a CV and a covering letter as per instructed on the job description. Applications with just a CV will not be considered.

About East London Arts & Music Academy (ELAM)

ELAM is a world-class 16-19 Academy which opened in September 2014. ELAM offers young people everything that they will need to lead successful lives within the music, games design and film and television sectors. We are based in Bromley-by-Bow, have Trainees from every borough in London and we are diverse in every way.

Our vision is that all children in the uk should see themselves reflected in uk culture. To do this we see our role as recruiting talented young creatives who, once they succeed, would diversify and ensure the creative industries are more representative.

We believe this can be achieved by increasing the access routes into those industries for talented young people. However, unlike many other industries, it is not always clear how to get into these jobs and therefore there is often a lack of diversity within these sectors. Increasing the access routes to everyone will therefore increase the quality of talent and the continued growth of the sector long term.

We don't do this alone

We have partnered with sector-leading organisations including YouTube, Universal Music, The BPI, Grain Media and Creative Assembly to devise a curriculum that will develop the future leaders of these sectors by meeting the relevant knowledge, skills and cultural demands. The involvement of these organisations sends a powerful message to young people that these careers are for them, they belong, that they can (and will) succeed.

Who is involved?

ELAM has been founded by a group of leading figures from industry and education. Will Kennard, Musician and one half of production duo Chase & Status, is a founder and governor. Alongside Will, the Governing body has senior executives from across the creative industries and education. We have support from a wide-range of partners from the music, film and games industries.

We work hard, we achieve high and we produce amazing creative products.

Our YouTube shows the range of talent that our Trainees have and develop - see ELAM’s vision in action here (our YouTube) and here (our most recent end of year showcasing website).

In addition, all trainees at ELAM undertake a study of Maths and English as we know written and spoken communication, problem solving, data analysis and research are the key traits of the leaders in these fields.
