Elmhurst Ballet School, in Association with Birmingham Royal Ballet, is a world-renowned centre for the training and education of talented, passionate and committed young ballet dancers. The school was recently judged to be excellent in all areas by ISI and outstanding in all areas by OFSTED and has an international reputation for the quality of its work. 

Most students board at the school and we offer fully equipped modern boarding houses for years 7 to 13. Lower School boarding is located on the School site and Upper School boarding is just a short walk away. The school is keen to grow its day student population and so ensuring day students feel included is important.

The school seeks to recruit a Vice Principal – Pastoral to start in January 2024 (or earlier if possible).

The successful applicant will be responsible for the overall management of the school’s pastoral support to students, safeguarding systems, oversight of systems to promote good behaviour and the provision of boarding. Through skilled and compassionate line management of the DSL Team, Director of Heath & Wellbeing and Heads of Lower and Upper School Boarding, they will ensure that student support systems are relevant, proactive and supportive. That success is celebrated and rewarded and staff are well equipped with good behaviour management strategies relevant to the school’s unique context. They will ensure that boarding is a caring and nurturing environment dedicated to the wellbeing and education of students and that our safeguarding provision remains outstanding and continually moves forward.

As key member of Elmhurst Ballet School’s Senior Leadership team, they will be an imaginative, innovative and compassionate senior leader with a track record of getting things done. Their professional career to date will show exemplary commitment to promoting the wellbeing and safety of young people. Significant experience of leading safeguarding and of managing teams is essential, an ability to listen and empathise as well as courageous to make decisions when needed are essential qualities. An excellent understanding of life in boarding is desirable.

Staff development is a priority at Elmhurst. We will support the successful candidate to grow professionally, flourish personally and contribute strategically to the success of the school. Senior leaders have access to an external professional coach, three times yearly. The team undertake strategy days to work on school developments and progress the 2025 Strategy to continually secure improvements.

Elmhurst Ballet School is an independent secondary school with a sixth form. It is situated in Edgbaston, Birmingham and is a specialist dance school. It is an associate school of Birmingham Royal Ballet. It opened in the 1920s in Surrey and moved to its current location in 2004. The school teaches girls and boys aged between 11 and 19. It has a dance studio which has over 250 seats for an audience. There is also a centre on the site for physiotherapy. The school has approximately 200 students (both boarders and day students).

Even though Elmhurst Ballet School wants students to learn through a balanced and enriching curriculum, its main focus is teaching them how to dance. Teachers care and support for the students throughout their school life. Pupils will develop morally, culturally and personally while at the school.

“Children are helped to be healthy and are clear that they feel safe and their welfare is promoted at the school. All have adults they trust and respect and get good support from house parents, nursing staff, academic and vocational tutors. Boarders enjoy being at the school and are happy, confident and articulate. The school has and follows an appropriate policy on countering major risks to health, including substance abuse. Boarders learn good health in personal, health and social education and house parents help them to stay healthy by monitoring and keeping in touch with parents and health staff.”
