Job overview

We are seeking to appoint a bright, tenacious and emotionally intelligent individual to join our Senior Leadership Team from April or September 2017. This post is significant, leading a large team of skilled practitioners and covering the areas of behaviour and safety, safeguarding, early help, tutorial provision, SEND, attendance, admissions and student praise systems. The remuneration reflects the level of responsibility. There will be an Assistant Principal assigned to work closely with the post holder to provide support and succession; we seek to appoint an ambitious person who desires headship within 4-5 years.

Our oversubscribed 11-18 Academy of 1400 students is transformational for the young people of our community and was judged 'Good' in all areas in February 2016. Results have increased dramatically and this year we have achieved a Progress 8 score which places us near to the top of all schools nationally. We have a thriving academic sixth form which achieved ALPS 3 in the summer of 2016. The sixth form is housed in a new multi-million pound mezzanine suite of rooms.

The Academy is part of the large United Learning group of schools which brings significant advantages to staff at a senior level seeking promotion and eventual headship. Opportunities exist within the United Learning Group to network and work with other Academies. There is a culture of collaboration and talent-spotting; good leaders often find themselves progressing to headship without leaving the group.

You will be ambitious for all students and staff, subscribing to our motto, “The best in everyone”. You will have excellent interpersonal skills and work with and motivate a wide range of staff and students.

This role will suit anyone with a track record of successful leadership operating at a senior level who wishes to work with a new Principal and achieve demonstrable impact across a whole academy.

Wherever your location, this is an ideal post as we shall offer the successful candidate a comprehensive induction and support package together with a well-developed and highly personalised CPD programme. You may also be eligible for a relocation assistance.

If this position sounds attractive, feel free to call our Principal, Nat Parnell, for an informal chat about the post and the Academy or apply directly.

United Learning is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expects all staff to share this commitment. An enhanced DBS check is required for the successful applicant.

Northampton Academy is a transformational comprehensive and non-selective school, serving a diverse community. We were proud to be judged 'outstanding' by Ofsted in all areas in March 2023. Our values, which underpin every decision we take, are RESPECT, DETERMINATION, AMBITION, TOLERANCE and INTEGRITY. We have a comprehensive student character-building programme, which has been nationally recognised through the Character Quality Mark Plus that was awarded in November 2021.

The leadership of the academy is completely determined to create an environment in which teachers can get on with their core role: delivering excellent lessons. To this end, the student behaviour system is clear and simple and easy to administer in lessons. If action is needed beyond these simple steps, the pastoral and senior teams take all the burden away from the teachers, conducting detentions, following up and dealing with parents on your behalf. Teachers at the academy speak of this as one of the major benefits of working here. In addition to this, teachers are trusted to be professionals through:

  • A genuine ‘flexi-working’ approach with at least one opportunity a week to come in      late or leave early for every teaching member of staff
  • No unannounced observations
  • No lesson grading
  • 3 extra INSET days per year for joint team planning
  • A feedback and recognition policy that lets teachers decide the best feedback mechanism for their own classes, rather than having this prescribed centrally

United Learning’s pledge, to all our academy teachers, is that by working for us you will benefit from more pay, more time and more support.

More pay…

• We pay an average of 5% above national scales – the best rates of pay in the sector

• Cash towards medical treatment

• Generous staff discount scheme

more time…

• Three extra INSET days for planning

• At least one personal day a year

and more support

• Great training for your career

• Exceptional curriculum resources

• Expert subject advice

• Support for your wellbeing
