Job overview

Hillsview Academy is an 11-19 academy of 800 students situated in the Teesville area of Redcar and Cleveland. We are within easy access of Middlesbrough and the Tees Valley and only 10 minutes from the A19 motorway. We are an inclusive school at the heart of our community.

Our students are the focus of all that we do and we place great importance on not only making sure that they achieve academic success, but also on developing their social skills and emotional maturity.

The first years as a new academy have not been without significant challenges, the predecessor schools were both in categories of concern. Much hard work has already been undertaken including embedding a new curriculum, re-modelling pastoral structures and ensuring that all members of the academy community understand the vision of ‘making our best better’. We believe that whilst there remains much to do the academy is now well placed to quickly move towards our aim of being outstanding. Despite a high turnover of staff, including a change of Principal, morale is high, behaviour is much improved and good and outstanding teaching and learning are becoming more consistent.

This role is not a typical Deputy Headteacher post. We are seeking to appoint a committed, driven and inspiring leader to become our sole Vice-Principal. Someone who aspires to Headship within two to four years, who will have a broad portfolio and develop a deep understanding of every aspect of the academy’s development. We are looking for someone who will work closely with the Principal and Executive Principal and directly with the team of committed Assistant Principals to ensure that quality assurance and accountability are common strands in all that we do. This is a key post for our school community as well as being a career defining opportunity for the successful candidate.

Our three main challenges moving forward are continuing to embed the highest expectations of all members of our learning community, delivering challenge and pace in the classroom and ensuring that all of our developmental work is underpinned by quality assurance with accountability. You will play a key role in this and will work closely with our talented and committed teams of leaders at middle and senior levels. Further specific accountabilities will be agreed with the successful candidate based upon their areas of expertise and development.

We are looking for:

  • Experience of leadership in a whole school role either as an outstanding Assistant Headteacher or as a Deputy looking for their next career move
  • Vision, drive and flare as you join our re-structured SLT
  • The ability to consult on, devise, communicate, implement, monitor and evaluate school improvement with a relentless focus on student outcomes
  • Relevant qualifications and a record of professional development (both formal and through appropriate experience) to meet the challenge of the job specifications
  • A genuine commitment to making a positive contribution to the school and creating an ethos in which students feel secure and valued.
  • A proven record of raising and maintaining standards in teaching and learning.

We offer:

  • An opportunity to join us as our sole deputy and be mentored to headship
  • A commitment to further developing you as a future leader through access to the school network of our sponsor Academies Enterprise Trust.
  • A commitment to facilitate your networking through Redcar and Cleveland Education Improvement Partnership and lead on key aspects of this work across school.
  • Purposeful and ready to learn students who will make you proud to be a teaching professional
  • A mentorship programme to develop you as a future Principal/Headteacher

We have arranged a series of visits where you will meet the Principal Doug Elliott. Monday 26 September – 8.30am and 2.15pm, Friday 30 September – 8.30am and 2.15pm and Thursday 6 October at 2.15pm.

Please contact Suzanne Corner (Secretary to the Principal) at scorner@hillsviewacademy.org to confirm your visit.

As the sponsor, AET believes that all young people deserve to become world-class learners – to learn, enjoy, succeed and thrive in a first rate educational environment with the best facilities, the best teaching and the most up-to-date resources available to them. In each of our schools, you will benefit from visionary, inspirational and dynamic leadership and be empowered to develop your own skills with access to world-class CPD and Talent Management programmes. You will also be entitled to the following benefits: a health cash plan, vehicle affinity scheme, Cycle2work, childcare vouchers and Westfield rewards.

This position is required for a January 2017 start. Interviews will be held on Monday and Tuesday 17 and 18 October 2016.

Closing date: 9am Monday 10 October 2016

We reserve the right to close this vacancy early should we receive an overwhelming response. All candidates are advised to refer to the job description and person specification before making an application.

We are a newly named academy, tucked in the shadow of the Eston Hills in Middlesbrough. We are proud of our industrial heritage, and of the work of generations of local families, mining the hills and crafting steel to build Britain. Whilst times have changed, we are committed to ensuring our future generations of students acquire the skills, confidence and qualifications to ensure they can go out into the world and make a huge difference.

Outwood Academy Normanby opened on 1 September 2019, sponsored by Outwood Grange Academies Trust (OGAT). The original Outwood Grange Academy in Wakefield founded the Trust to lead the improvement of other schools in the North East of England. The Trust currently sponsors a number of secondary and primaries in the region. Outwood Grange Academy has been a National Training school for over ten years, was accredited as one of the country’s first Teaching Schools. The established Outwood Institute of Education continues this work.

The predecessor Hillsview Academy was judged by Ofsted in July 2017 to require special measures, and later chose Outwood Grange Academies Trust as sponsor to lead the school from a category to outstanding in as short a time as possible. We are determined that the academy will rapidly transform and we have a proven record of supporting schools in this way.

Our Academy vision is ‘Students First.’ We put our students at the heart of everything we do, and drive change in our schools quickly by focusing on ‘Raising Standards, Transforming Lives’. We simply believe that “the whole point of schools is that children come first and everything we do must reflect this single goal.”

We are determined to provide the highest of standards of education for students. Our innovative vertical curriculum personalises the learning of all students. Fast-track opportunities and workshops provide accelerated routes for some students while others have the time to succeed with longer period of GCSE study. Vocational, practical, creative and academic qualities are valued equally in the academy where we really do embrace the ‘Transferable Skills’ agenda.
