This is an excellent opportunity for a remarkable candidate to work in an Ofsted Grade 1 ‘Outstanding’, large (2,300 16-19 students), inclusive and highly successful Sixth Form College near central Birmingham, and with a direct commute from Solihull, Tamworth, Wolverhampton, Walsall, West Bromwich, Coventry, and the other towns and cities of the West and East Midlands. We have award-winning buildings and car parking on site for those who commute. Our students make excellent progress – within the top 10% of all school Sixth Forms - and progress to the best universities (including Oxbridge and the Russell Group) and employers.

We are looking for a Vice Principal [Student Welfare and Progression] to lead Joseph Chamberlain Sixth Form College’s pastoral provision, including student welfare, careers and progression, and to assume strategic leadership of tutorial support, student behaviour, safeguarding and inclusion as the College moves into the next phase of our development.

We want to appoint a leader who is highly experienced in safeguarding and in leading on student behaviour and welfare in a large organisation. You’ll have visibility, confidence and presence amongst our staff and students and be passionate about (and experienced in) working in an inner-city, ethnically diverse, inclusive College or school.

This is an excellent time to join the College– we have more students and are achieving better results than we have ever seen. We have been on a remarkable journey and the future is very exciting for us. Student applications are at a record high for next year and we are in the process of expanding our facilities to accommodate the increasing popularity of the College.  The College is in Outstanding financial health. This year, we were shortlisted for the Times Educational Supplement sixth form college of the year, we have introduced higher education and teacher training programmes and our work in supporting other educational providers continues to expand. As the best-performing Sixth Form College in the Midlands, we have also made a commitment to helping other SFCs improve and are currently part of a SCIF project, supporting another institution.

This is a unique opportunity, and we believe that you will find the role rewarding both professionally and personally. This position will have strong appeal to –

• An Assistant Principal/Assistant Headteacher within a Sixth Form College, GFE College, or School with a Sixth-Form, experienced in pastoral provision and as a safeguarding lead, who is excited by the prospect of joining a high-performing, successful, friendly and inclusive College that is growing its provision and helping others in the sector.

• A Deputy Headteacher who enjoys leading in a Good or Outstanding school at KS5 and is excited by the opportunity to make a real difference to the life-chances of students from Birmingham, and is seeking opportunities to help deliver pastoral excellence and support to young people on a wider scale.

Whatever your previous experience, we will ensure this post is the right one for you with real prospects of career progression and job satisfaction.

The successful applicant will:

• Act as the Designated Safeguarding Lead for the College

• Strategically lead our pastoral, wellbeing, welfare and tutorial provision, including student behaviour across the College

• Strategically lead our work with vulnerable learners, and lead our inclusion team, who work with students with additional needs and disabilities

• Strategically lead on careers and student progression, including UCAS/HE applications

Potential candidates are welcome to contact our advisers ASDTi on 01457 851407 or 07736 775776 to arrange a visit to the College.

The appointment is, of course, subject to satisfactory references and a successful enhanced DBS Disclosure.

Further details and a full application pack are available from our advisers ASDTi by visiting and downloading from www.jcsfc.co.uk by e-mailing gm@asdti.com or by calling 01457 851407.

ASDTi are available on our behalf during evenings and weekends as well and would be pleased to organise a visit to the college for interested candidates, or to discuss remuneration, career or relocation expectations.

Closing date for applications: Tuesday, 14th May 2019 at 12 midnight

Shortlisting will take place as soon as possible after the close date.

Interviews will be held on the 21st and/or 22nd May 2019

About Us

Joseph Chamberlain College is a hugely popular and highly successful Sixth Form College that was established in 1983 and now offers a wide range of academic courses at all levels to around 2600 school leavers and approximately 700 adults on a separate site.

Our curriculum offer and entry criteria are highly inclusive, offering clear progression routes to success for all students, regardless of their starting points and backgrounds. Approximately 80% of our work is with 16-18 year olds at Level 3, who study AS/A Levels or Level 3 BTEC Extended Diplomas. At Level 2, we offer BTECs and GCSE programmes to 16-18 year olds; at Entry Level and Level 1, we have an extensive ESOL provision. In addition, our separate Adult Learning Directorate offers classes in ESOL, Literacy, Numeracy and Access to HE in a range of community venues. We also offer Teacher Training in partnership with Birmingham City University. Our wider curriculum is also rich and varied allowing students to benefit from a great deal of choice in sports, additional languages, performing arts, citizenship, and various other student-led clubs/societies.

In 2023, students at Joseph Chamberlain College achieved outstanding exam results, placing us in the top 25% of all schools and colleges nationally for the tenth consecutive year. In the most recent Ofsted inspection of December 2023, we were graded as ‘outstanding’ in all categories for the second time; we are the only College in the West Midlands to achieve this in two consecutive inspections. Our College continues to provide a broad, inclusive and high-quality education to all of our students which results in exceptionally high levels of progression to Higher Education. We were in the Parliamentary Review for a second time for best practice in further education, and we have been awarded the Teachers’ Development Trust (TDT) Silver award for our comprehensive package of innovative and high-impact professional development. As part of a local Teaching Alliance, we support all newly qualified teachers, from both secondary and post-16 backgrounds, to complete their ECT year and achieve either QTS or QTLS.

The College is situated within easy reach of Birmingham city centre in a state-of-the-art building with superbly equipped classrooms and outstanding facilities.

We are an ambitious institution, with a clear strategy to keep being highly successful for our students. Staff, students and visitors often comment on the warm and welcoming atmosphere at the College and the strong sense of community that permeates the organisation.
