PURPOSE OF JOB: 

The school seeks to appoint an inspirational leader to work alongside the Principal and the wider leadership team of our large all-through school. The Vice Principal (Quality of Education – Teaching, Learning & Assessment) will have a significant role in leading and creating the conditions for all our students to be successful and achieve their full potential.

· Support the Principal and governors in establishing and delivering the vision for the continued success and development of the school.  

· Communicate the school’s vision compellingly and support the Principal’s strategic leadership. 

· Build positive relationships with members of the school community, recognising and demonstrating that teamwork and communication are critical to this role, promoting a culture in which the views of all members of the school community are valued and considered.  

· Play a leading role in the school improvement planning process, taking account of the agreed priorities of the school and contributing to the identification of key areas of strength and weakness in the school. 

· Keep up to date with developments and relevant research in education.  

· Seek training and continuing professional development to meet own needs and professional learning. 

· Attend governor meetings and present reports relating to areas of responsibilities.  

· Support the Principal and SLT in the day-to-day management of the school.   

Key responsibilities  

Quality of Education – Teaching, Learning & Assessment  

· In conjunction with the Vice Principals (Curriculum & Student Achievement and Primary), Assistant Vice-Principal (SENCo) and Associate Assistant Vice Principal (Teaching, Learning & Assessment – Primary), ensure the intent, implementation and impact of the curriculum aligns with the school’s vision and the diversity of the school community, meeting the needs of all students, including those with SEND and those from disadvantaged backgrounds, and provides them with the richness, breadth and depth they need to achieve future successes.   

· In liaison with the Assistant Vice-Principal for Student Achievement and Associate Assistant Vice Principal (Teaching, Learning & Assessment – Primary), develop an assessment process which enables teachers to accurately assess students’ knowledge and understanding of the planned curriculum so that strengths can be highlighted, and weaknesses can be addressed quickly. 

· In conjunction with the Associate Assistant Vice Principal (Teaching, Learning & Assessment – Primary) and secondary Heads of Department, evaluate the planning and sequencing of curricula and assessments to ensure students gain the most relevant knowledge, skills and understanding in each subject.  

· Lead the Quality of Education – Teaching, Learning & Assessment team to robustly monitor and evaluate the quality of learning, ensuring that curriculum delivery, assessment and interventions are effective and have impact. 

· Lead and co-ordinate early intervention support for teachers where practice is not yet meeting expected standards, monitoring and evaluating the impact of this support and determining appropriate next steps. 

· Lead the whole school CPDL programme to support development towards the school’s identified improvement priorities, as well as engage and motivate teachers, support staff and leaders at all levels, fostering their strengths as practitioners and autonomous professionals who reflect, question and research elements of their own practice.  

· Routinely engage student voice across all school years to inform evaluations of the Quality of Education 

· Oversee all policies and procedures relating to the Quality of Education – Teaching, Learning & Assessment 

· Assist with the selection and recruitment of staff and plan and coordinate induction for new staff. 

· To line manage named curriculum areas and be responsible for performance management of identified staff including carrying out appraisals, providing professional development opportunities, and holding staff to account to their performance. 

· To assist with the reporting of the performance of the school to parents, carers, governors and other key partners as necessary, providing reports and information related to your areas of responsibility as required.  

· To promote and model good relationships with parents, which are based on partnerships to support and improve students’ achievement.  

· To promote links and good relationships with the local community and outside agencies.

As part of Sydney Russell’s continued growth we are seeking new ambitious teachers to join our team both on our Primary & Secondary School sites.

Sydney Russell School has benefitted from substantial capital investment since the school’s formation. It has excellent accommodation: In the Secondary school teaching rooms are arranged as departmental suites. There is a very large, beautifully-appointed Library/Resource Centre; all of the rooms in our newest two blocks are air-conditioned; a superb Leisure Centre has been built for the school to use during the day and the community in the evenings and at weekends. The Primary School is currently expanding with renovation work underway. The school is a 3 form entry Primary and will continue to grow over the next few years.

Ethos

The ethos at Sydney Russell in one of traditional values. We take a very firm line on discipline, uniform and good manners. We have moved decisively away from any mixed-ability teaching groups: all classes are in three broad ability bands, with some departments, such as Science and Maths using additional finer setting. On discipline, we have a centrally-organised reward and relocation scheme and school detention to take the strain off individual members of staff as well as behaviour modification groups in to take any particularly challenging students out of mainstream classes. Generous additional funding, through Excellence in Cities and other specific grants, has enabled us to provide further extensive targeted support in the form of Learning Mentors, a Learning Support Unit and additional support assistants.
