Job overview

September 2023

We are looking for a dedicated, inspirational, and imaginative teacher to join a distinguished and vibrant team of piano teachers for between 1 and 4 days per week. The role will involve working with ambitious pupils working towards Conservatoire or University entrance alongside those at the very start of their musical journeys, helping to ensure that each individual has the opportunity to reach their full potential.

We encourage all Visiting Music Teachers to be actively involved in the wider musical life of our thriving music department, whether accompanying, coaching ensembles, or helping to run one-off events, masterclasses or workshops. With at least three concerts every week, there are opportunities for pupils at all levels to perform, from informal performances in the Coffee Shop through to concerto opportunities. There are regular masterclasses and guest performances as part of the Visiting Recital Series, and considerable scope for new ideas and the growth of links with external musicians and organisations.

A growing number of piano pupils are active as accompanists, whilst the Piano Extravaganza provides a unique opportunity for boys to experience newly commissioned multi-piano arrangements, for up to 21 pianists at 7 grand pianos. Pianists are also visible throughout the department on a daily basis, whether playing the Big Band or Symphony Orchestra, accompanying choir rehearsals, recording as part of a band for Radley Records, or as part of our thriving Chamber Music programme (this year the senior piano trio were finalists in the national Pro Corda Chamber Music Festival).

As well as a knowledge of teaching strategies, teaching repertoire and adaptability to the individual, the successful applicant will show an active interest in current teaching trends and pursuing their own professional development as an instrumental teacher and performer.

In general the role of a Visiting Music Teacher at Radley is defined as:

· the teaching, progress and development of each individual student within their specialism.

· designing a curriculum for each pupil based upon a shared goal;

· helping the pupil to achieve this by their professional help and expertise;

· keeping records of a pupil’s instrumental progress and up to date with all documentation;

· providing clear and helpful reports to parents at the end of each term;

· keeping abreast of current developments in instrumental teaching.

· actively contributing to the partnerships programme, including promoting boys’ involvement in partnership activities.

· promoting external opportunities (such as holiday courses and ensembles) and building links with musicians from outside Radley College (such as through masterclasses, workshops, and recitals).

· working with the Precentor (Director of Music) to attract future music scholars.
