Aldwickbury School is looking for a talented individual to teach piano at this thriving all-boys prep school. 

The successful candidate will be required to:

• Teach piano lessons for one day a week on a one-to-one basis with boys ranging from Years 1 - 8 (ages 5 – 13).

• Where appropriate, prepare students for exams in piano, ensuring that student’s knowledge of theory, and sight-playing are developed as part of their teaching.  

• Maintain a practice record and attendance record for each student.

• Organise their timetable rotation and email this to the Director of Music each week in accordance with the music department policy.  

• Complete a full set of student instrumental reports twice each academic year, in accordance with the department template.

• Maintain good communication with pupils’ parents, through the practice notebook and by other correspondence as necessary.

Applicants are likely to have:

• A recognised music qualification in piano.

• Experience of teaching piano to preparatory school aged pupils. 

• Experience of teaching to exam syllabus requirements and a good track record of exam results. 

• A pleasant manner with pupils, enthusiasm for the instrument and a good sense of humour.

• An acceptance that each pupil is different and the ability to vary their teaching style so as to get the very best out of each child.

Alongside this:

• The ability to take on music theory students looking to take Grades 1 - 5 music theory exams may also be an advantage.

Aldwickbury is a highly regarded and established preparatory school, having been founded in Harpenden in 1937, moving to the current site in 1948. The school occupies a fine Victorian house in pleasant country surrounds. The facilities and resources are very good and the premises are well equipped and are set in twenty acres of grounds. The school is run as a charitable company and is a member of I.A.P.S., the Boarding Schools Association and the International Boys’ School Coalition. 

There are approximately 250 boys in Years 3 to 8, and another 125 boys in our Pre-Preparatory department. Boys from Year 5 may board and some 50 do so on a flexible basis. Boys leave Aldwickbury at 13+ via Common Entrance, entry tests or scholarship examinations for senior independent schools such as St Albans, Bedford, Haileybury, St Columba’s, Berkhamsted, H.A.B.S., Harrow, The Leys, M.T.S. and Oundle.  

Aldwickbury looks to develop boys’ self-esteem and ensure that they reach their potential in all aspects of school life. The boys’ achievements in classwork, drama, art, music, sport and so on are celebrated whenever possible. The school is busy and purposeful; visitors often comment on the friendly open nature of the boys. The Staff Common Room is happy and dedicated; in service training is encouraged and provided for all members of staff.
