Job overview

Visiting Teacher of Cello (self employed) required for September 2022, Tiffin School, Kingston upon Thames, KT2 6RL

More information from https://sites.google.com/tiffin.kingston.sch.uk/music/staff-vacancies. Applications will be considered as they are received. The successful applicant will be appointed as soon as is practical.

Tiffin School wishes to appoint a visiting teacher of cello to teach individual lessons to pupils across the school’s age range (11-18). Initially, the successful applicant will teach approximately 5.5 hours of cello lessons (11 pupils), but this is likely to increase, so a candidate with additional availability is preferred. The teacher will be self-employed, receiving £40 per hour. Subscription to the DBS update service (a portable DBS certificate) is desirable. We regret that we cannot provide on-site parking for visiting music teachers. Applicants must complete the application form, the link to which can be found here: https://sites.google.com/tiffin.kingston.sch.uk/music/staff-vacancies

or from momalley@tiffin.kingston.sch.uk (CVs will not be accepted). Tiffin School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people, and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.  The successful applicant will be required to undertake an enhanced Disclosure and Barring (criminal record) check, with any offer of employment subject to its satisfactory outcome.

The teacher will be expected to engage pupils with suitable repertoire, prepare them for performances, coursework recordings and examinations, and report on their progress. Recognising that pupils’ success depends chiefly upon their playing-time outside lessons, the teacher will be persistent and creative in encouraging pupils to practise their instrument and perform to others.

Music is highly valued at Tiffin, a selective state grammar school for boys (Years 7-13) and girls (Years 12-13) in Kingston-upon-Thames (0.3 miles from Kingston rail), with Tiffin pupils participating in over 40 musical performances each year. Tiffin School's choirs work regularly with London’s major orchestras and choruses, including the LSO, Philharmonia and Royal Opera. Tiffin pupils have recently performed at venues including the RAH, RFH and Barbican, on national radio and on television, including BBC, ITV and Classic FM, and on tour.

Applications should be sent to Matthew O’Malley, Director of Music: momalley@tiffin.kingston.sch.uk Tiffin School, Queen Elizabeth Road, Kingston upon Thames, KT2 6RL

About Tiffin School

Tiffin School is one of the foremost boys' selective schools in the country with a large Sixth Form which went mixed in 2019.

Tiffin is a great place to teach – it is a friendly, dynamic school where all can thrive and staff are highly valued. Conveniently situated near the centre of the beautiful London Borough of Kingston upon Thames, it is very easy to reach. Our students are bright, able and eager to learn, and we have an environment of excellent behaviour, allowing the opportunity to teach your subject to a high level.

Tiffin achieves excellent results at A Level and GCSE, as well as great success in achieving places for our students at the top universities. However, Tiffin is about far more than academic success; our aim is to develop the whole person.  Tiffin offers a wide range of superb opportunities for its students in our attempt to fulfil our vision of inspiring students to ‘engage, aspire and excel’.  Sport, Music, the Performing Arts, the House system, and an extensive programme of trips, provide regular opportunities for the students, and are offered by a staff that enthusiastically support this unique provision of co-curricular activities in a state school.

The move to make the Sixth Form mixed, the introduction of Google Chromebooks to all pupils and staff, and the significant recent capital expenditure in new buildings and facilities, all demonstrate our commitment to constantly develop the school for the future.

Tiffin offers an excellent place to teach and to develop one’s career in a stimulating, supportive and enjoyable education environment.
