Job overview

The School

Magdalen College School, founded in 1480 by William of Waynflete, is one of the country’s leading independent day schools. It is situated in an enviable location at the heart of Oxford beside the River Cherwell.

The Role

MCS is seeking to appoint a hard-working, skilled and motivated individual from 6th January 2023, to help further develop sport within the Junior School. The successful applicant will be expected to coach pupils from the ages of 7-11 in a variety of sports including Rugby, Hockey, Tennis, Athletics and Cricket. This will involve participation in training and fixtures as well as contributing to Junior School life through a variety of duties, supervision, trips and events. This is a fixed-term contract ending 31st August 2023.

The Junior School Sports Intern will be responsible to the Head of Junior School Sport for the proper discharge of his or her duties. These will include all aspects relating to helping with the administration of a year-round coaching and training programme, taking teams through a competitive and balanced fixture list and inspiring pupils within the Junior School to play sport both inside and outside school. This will be in addition to other duties in the Junior School, as reasonably requested by the Director of Sport and the Head of Junior School. There will also be the opportunity to work with some of the senior school pupils during their games lessons. The nature of the role is such that a full, clean driving license with the ability and willingness to drive minibuses would be an advantage.

The precise nature of the role will be shaped to fit the strengths of the candidate appointed, but the key roles are likely to include the following:

  • Coaching, refereeing/umpiring and managing teams in the focus sports, which are rugby, hockey, cricket and tennis
  • Taking responsibility for sports teams at fixtures (after school and on some Saturdays)
  • Assisting with any administration, planning or coaching of the games programme as required
  • Leading and assisting in the coaching of sports sessions
  • Assisting in PE Lessons in a range of activities, building experience through the curriculum
  • Additional extra-curricular training sessions
  • Supervisory duties, covering classroom lessons, and accompanying trips as required (sometimes during the school holidays)
  • Ensuring coaches and pupils have access to appropriate equipment required for all fixtures and training sessions
  • Enthusiasm and passion for sport and encouraging pupils into club sport and raising awareness of the representative pathways
  • Attending and contributing to MCS Sport departmental meetings and Open Morning activities
  • Overseeing the Junior School sport section of the noticeboard, school website and contributing, where appropriate, to whole school marketing

Please refer to the attached ‘Information Pack’ for more information.

The Candidate

  • The ideal candidate should be technically knowledgeable, display a high level of organisation mixed with enthusiasm for junior participation, and have the ability to demonstrate initiative. It would be advantageous if the candidate has experience of either playing or coaching at a high level.
  • Previous experience of coaching or teaching in a school would be beneficial, as would an understanding of sport as part of a thriving extra-curricular provision. An ability to work closely with the Sports Department and provide support for coaches from the Junior School teaching staff is key, as well as communicating effectively to pupils, parents and staff. This is a fabulous opportunity for those considering a future career in teaching with the majority of candidates that join us deciding that this is the route they would like to take. About Magdalen College School

MCS has a rich and distinctive history. The school was founded in 1480 by William Waynflete who believed in education as a facilitator of social mobility, and as such wanted to found a school of an entirely new kind. MCS quickly flourished as a school which firmly connected school education with a newly emerging university education and it soon became one of the country’s leading schools.

Today MCS provides a first-class education for boys aged 7-18 and sixth form girls. The school is small enough to develop every young person’s character and talents, yet large enough to provide a wide range of subjects and activities. MCS encourages a respect for learning whilst developing in every pupil a close interest in a wide range of extra-curricular interests.

MCS pupils enjoy a stimulating curriculum which is designed both to provide academic stretch and challenge, and to equip pupils with the skills for success beyond school.

In the early years, the emphasis is on exposing pupils to a wide range of subjects in order to discover their interests and talents. Pupils are put in sets by ability in French at 11 and in Mathematics at 12, no other subjects are set. There is an additional intake of pupils from prep and maintained schools at 13 and it is at this stage that boys make their first subject choices. Almost all pupils take ten (I)GCSEs, an increasing number of which are now reformed 9-1 (I)GCSEs.

Although MCS consistently secures outstanding public examination results, the real priority in the Sixth Form is on teaching beyond the syllabus, and the formation of habits of mind for life. In the Lower Sixth all pupils study at least four subjects, research and write their Waynflete Project (a 5000 word essay on a subject of their choice), undertake a community service or CCF placement, and participate in Games. From September 2017 all A Level (or Pre-U) courses will be linear; MCS pupils will no longer sit AS Levels. In the Upper Sixth, between one third and one half of Sixth Formers gain four or more A Levels, and there is a programme of lectures from visiting speakers, as well as UCAS applications and Games.

The School was last inspected by the Independent Schools Inspectorate in 2017 and was recognised as “excellent” in both of the assessed outcomes: “Quality of Pupil Achievement” and “Quality of Pupil Personal Development”.
