Job overview

We are seeking a well-organised, capable and self-motivated individual to co-ordinate substantial work placements and support the careers team.

Work experience is a key element of the student programme and it is a compulsory element of most vocational (BTEC) courses. This area of work has grown as more students undertake vocational courses and as the expectation of work experience has increased. The College will be placing some students on substantial work placements of over 315 hours in line with the expectations of the Work Placement Capacity and Delivery Fund which is a government initiative to pilot such placements in preparation for the introduction of T Levels.

The Work Placement Officer will liaise with students, teaching staff and employers to arrange substantial placements and to ensure that all the necessary paperwork and checks are in place. This includes ensuring that risk assessments are in place and visiting employers, monitoring student progress, getting feedback, and following up any issues or concerns arising from a placement. It is essential that the successful candidate has excellent interpersonal and communication skills, as well as a keen eye for detail.

In addition, the Work Placement Officer will support the careers team in a number of ways, including with the organisation of some of the shorter work experience placements and general careers events within the College. The careers team organises careers talks and a series of events throughout the college year e.g. Careers Fair, Apprenticeship Fair, HE Fair and Voluntary Work Fair. Links with local employers are well established and the team constantly seek ways to forge new links. Careers Talks include those from local and national employers but also speakers from universities.

Given the varied nature of the role the successful candidate must be approachable and have a pro-active and flexible attitude to all tasks. In return you will work alongside experienced and supportive colleagues and the role has the opportunity for professional development and progression for the right person.

Closing Date: Midnight, Monday 9th April 2018.

Interviews are provisionally arranged for Tuesday 17th April 2018.

College Overview

Scarborough Sixth Form College is an open-access College, which provides general education primarily for 16-19 year olds in the area. The majority of our 1000+ students are full-time, and follow Advanced (level 3) courses from which most progress onto Higher Education.  The College has developed a very successful vocationally-related provision in a range of BTEC Nationals and we also offer a one-year Level 2 programme (our “Progression Year”) consisting of GCSEs in Maths, English and Science plus a range of BTEC Firsts.  Achievement at the College is high, and above national benchmarks, with outstanding positive value-added overall.  The College had an Inspection in December 2019 and was confirmed as a Good provider.

The College provides a pleasant environment in which to work, being set in attractive grounds on the edge of town. College campus facilities have been enhanced by almost £5 million investment. Scarborough itself offers an attractive coastline and beaches and is situated on the edge of the North York Moors, within easy reach of the City of York.
