Job overview

We are seeking an ambitious and highly effective Head of Department to lead a high performing team across A Level Mathematics, Physics and Computing provision. The successful candidate should also be able to deliver A level Mathematics to our motivated and highly engaged students. This is an exciting opportunity for an exceptional teacher looking to progress into middle leadership or a current leader who would like a new challenge.

Newcastle Sixth Form College offers an academic A Level curriculum in an inclusive and aspirational environment, where students are supported to go onto exceptional destinations. Over 1300 students choose to study with us, often travelling long distances to do so. As a result of high-quality teaching and learning, and a well embedded respect ethos, students at Newcastle Sixth Form College are significantly more likely to progress to university based on starting points than students nationally.

A Level Mathematics is a popular subject with over 100 students enrolling each academic year. We also offer Further Maths and Maths in Context within our curriculum, both of which have exceptionally successful outcomes. A Level Physics and Computing are growing subject areas and are often studied alongside Mathematics. We have a small cohort of learners who re-sit GCSE Mathematics with performance and student outcomes sitting significantly above national rates.

The department is dedicated to the incorporation of subject specific enrichment opportunities with students taking part in a range of activities including the UKMT Senior Challenge. We also support students in preparing for HE admissions examinations including STEP, MAT and the TMUA.Subject specific CPD is encouraged and we have excellent links with the AMSP.

The Head of Department will form part of the Wider College Leadership Team and will lead a team of teachers in an environment dedicated to academic achievement and the aspirational progression of all students. If you have high expectations of yourself and those you teach and work with, we would love to hear from you.

At Newcastle Sixth Form College we want to enable teachers and Heads of Department to be their best; our standard full time Head of Department is responsible for three blocks of subject teaching (15 hours per week). In addition to this we offer pay, terms and conditions commensurate with schools and sixth form colleges.

We welcome applications from experienced teachers and leaders from schools, sixth form colleges and other post-16 A Level providers. We expect our staff to be positive role models for young people and we celebrate our diverse community, therefore we encourage applications from everyone regardless of age, gender, sexuality, ethnicity, beliefs or disability.

Newcastle Sixth Form College is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults. We expect all staff to share this commitment.
