Job overview

We are seeking an ambitious and highly effective Head of Department to lead our high performing Psychology team. This is an exciting opportunity for an exceptional teacher looking to progress into middle leadership or a current leader who would like a new challenge.

Newcastle Sixth Form College offers an academic A Level curriculum in an inclusive and aspirational environment, where students are supported to go onto exceptional destinations. Over 1300 students choose to study with us, often travelling long distances to do so. As a result of high-quality teaching and learning, and a well embedded respect ethos, students at Newcastle Sixth Form College are significantly more likely to progress to university based on starting points than students nationally.

A Level Psychology is a popular subject with over 250 students enrolling each year. Our A Level Psychology students perform in the top 25% nationally progressing typically onto higher education. The department is dedicated to the incorporation of subject specific enrichment opportunities with students taking part in Psychology beyond the curriculum, mindfulness, and forensic Psychology.

The Head of Psychology will form part of the Wider College Leadership Team and will lead a team of teachers in an environment dedicated to academic achievement and the aspirational progression of all students. If you have high expectations of yourself and those you teach and work with, we would love to hear from you.

At Newcastle Sixth Form College we want to enable teachers and Heads of Department to be their best; our standard full time Head of Department is responsible for three blocks of subject teaching (15 hours per week). In addition to this we offer pay, terms and conditions commensurate with schools and sixth form colleges.

Newcastle Sixth Form College is part of NCG, a national group of colleges promoting social mobility and enabling economic prosperity. We offer a wide range of professional development opportunities through the college group, the Sixth Form College Association and our internal CPD programme.

We welcome applications from experienced teachers and leaders from schools, sixth form colleges and other post-16 A Level providers. We expect our staff to be positive role models for young people and we celebrate our diverse community, therefore we encourage applications from everyone regardless of age, gender, sexuality, ethnicity, beliefs or disability.

Applicants are welcome to arrange a visit by emailing liz.friend@newcastlesfc.ac.uk

Newcastle Sixth Form College is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults. We expect all staff to share this commitment.

Newcastle Sixth Form College

Established in 2013, Newcastle Sixth Form College  focuses on academic qualifications with an emphasis on providing students with the qualifications they need to progress to University.

NSFC attracts students from over 100 schools from Newcastle and across the North East to access our dedicated facilities and broad A Level offer, with 27 subjects available to study.

Our students choose NSFC for our inclusive approach. They welcome the opportunity to study subject combinations that allow them to progress, in an environment which bridges the gap between school and university. We have also developed a strong ‘respect’ ethos within the college and student feedback indicates that they feel safe and supported regardless of their background, gender or other characteristics; this is because we strongly maintain that there should be no barrier to success at NSFC.

As well as expert A Level tuition we have an enrichment offer of over 40 activities designed to socially and physically develop our students and help prepare them for their next step.

We are active members of both the Association of Colleges and the Sixth Form Colleges Association.
