We are delighted that the Humanities department remains a popular choice among our students at Key Stages 4 and 5. We are particularly proud that a significant number of Year 13 students who graduated in 2023 have chosen to pursue further studies in this area  at the university level. This success is a testament to the quality of education and the passion instilled by our dedicated Humanities department.

As we continue to witness growth in our sixth form, we are excited to announce a career opportunity within this department. The department, currently composed of skilled teaching staff members led by History and Geography  Heads of Department, is set to expand in tandem with the increasing size of our sixth form. The successful applicant for this post will have the unique opportunity to contribute to curriculum development, elevate educational standards, and take on a leadership role as the Head of Department. This role specifically focuses on leading a small team in the dynamic and fastest-growing subjects at Coombe Wood School. We encourage enthusiastic individuals who are dedicated to fostering academic excellence to apply for this exciting position.

Leading and co-ordinating activities relating to the Humanities department, to include: 

1. To oversee the day to day running of History and Geography and promote excellent teaching so that all students achieve their potential within an atmosphere in which students feel challenged, valued and secure. 

2. Developing, monitoring, reviewing, evaluating effectiveness of and reporting on policy, action plans and practice. 

3. Planning and managing associated resources/teaching materials, teaching programmes, courses of study, methods of teaching and progress. 

4. To be responsible for securing the highest standards of student achievement, through monitoring and evaluation of student progress and setting targets for improvement. 

5. To lead and support the team of staff who deliver Humanities lessons and those with responsibility for Careers and Citizenship. 

6. To lead, develop and enhance the teaching practice of others in Humanities by providing CPD and evaluating, supporting, guiding and target setting.

 7. Support the development of the Inclusive and Nurturing Schools programme and liaise with colleagues to promote equality of opportunity and diversity effectively. 

8. Work alongside other colleagues to develop opportunities for active citizenship, student volunteering and community contribution.

9. To be accountable for the strategic leadership and management of Humanities


Further salary enhancement available for the following responsibilities: 

  • To work alongside the SLT and Headteacher, as agreed, to support with the delivery of high-quality learning across the School; ensuring Coombe Wood achieves outstanding practice
  • To make a support our Early Careers provision
  • To build Coombe Wood Schools capacity to improve, through mentoring, coaching, professional development, and performance management as appropriate
  • To identify and model best practice and ensure this is shared and distributed across the school

The school is situated opposite Lloyd Park in South Croydon, with an excellent Tramlink service to and from East Croydon station (just 5 minutes’ journey-time away) and a short walk from several bus routes. Over £35 million has been invested in our state-of-the-art school, including enhanced sports and performing arts facilities, comprising a competition-sized sports hall, a full-size 3G artificial surface, sprung dance floor studios, music rooms and a recording studio.

About us – context, location and buildings 

This fully inclusive secondary co-educational school was established in 2018 to meet an urgent rising local demand. 

The site of our new building and extensive grounds is opposite Lloyd Park in South Croydon, with an excellent Tramlink service to and from East Croydon station (just 5-minute journey-time away,) and a short walk from several bus routes. 

Our £35 million building and facilities offer specialist teaching spaces for all subjects including Music, Dance, Drama, Science, Design Technology and Art.
