About Coombe Wood School
A brand new free school for Croydon
To meet the local rising demand, Coombe Wood School will be a new secondary fully inclusive co-educational school serving the communities in South and Central Croydon for children aged 11-18: when full it will offer a maximum of 1680 school places, with up to 240 in each sixth form year, Y12 opening in 2021. Its year-on-year expansion will create natural career progression and fast track opportunities for promotion in the early years.
Our aim is that Coombe Wood School will offer an innovative slant on a traditional education to meet the needs of the 21st century pupil, tailored to the local demographic and maximizing what our brand new facilities will offer. CWS will focus upon three main academic strands which, for some pupils, may overlap to provide them with a well-rounded education full of opportunity and memorable experiences.
Strand 1: Sport and Health Related Fitness
Strand 2: Creative and the Performing Arts
Strand 3: Academic Studies (including non-vocational subjects leading to FE)
The intention is to deliver a different approach to sport education found in most other secondary schools. By focusing on a narrow range of sports the school hopes to promote depth rather than breadth. Coombe Wood School aims to be a centre for the creative and performing arts developing close links with other providers and performance venues in the local area.
Pastoral care will operate through the house system, these being named after local places and famous Croydon residents, past and present.
Coombe Wood School is part of the Folio Education Trust, which brings the advantages of access to local expertise and collaboration within trust schools, including ‘outstanding’ Ofsted gradings and excellent progress scores. This also provides future opportunities for career progression. Folio Education Trust was established to develop a family of schools that transcend the Croydon and Sutton boroughs and comprises one grammar, two primaries and the new Free School with the aim of working together and putting the best interests of young people in mind.
