Job overview

We are seeking to appoint a full time teacher of Physical Education, with ability to teach at Key Stages 3 and 4, from September 2024. This is an exceptional opportunity for an outstanding ECT or experienced teacher to join a strong and successful team.

Oathall is an ambitious, forward thinking and growing 11-16 community college with over 1300 students. The school is characterised by our high expectations and an absolute commitment to raising standards and achievement for all. We are committed to Continuing Professional Learning through a strong training programme and work closely with our local federation schools.

The college has a full spectrum of specialist accommodation catering for all subjects. We are understandably proud of our refurbished Maths and Science Block. Subjects that require specialist learning spaces have access to them; be it the flood lit 3G artificial turf pitch in PE, Fitness Gym, the 3D printer in engineering, the Mac suite in music or the purpose built dance studio in performing arts.

PE at Oathall is taught by a team of specialist teachers supported by a dedicated faculty assistant. Students achieve very good outcomes year on year; in 2023, 35% of our GCSE PE students achieved a grade 7+, 70% achieved at 5+ and 79% achieved at 4+. The faculty is very well resourced with thorough schemes of work in place for all years. Enquiry and independence is very much at the centre of learning within the faculty and our inclusive teaching and learning ethos is clearly embedded in lessons by all staff.

Leadership in the faculty is extremely strong. Working alongside the Head of Faculty is a Deputy Head of Faculty, a Learning Manager and also an Enrichment Leader. Between them they take responsibility for the leadership of all aspects of the faculty’s work and development. All leaders in the faculty are also members of one of our whole school leadership groups which meet regularly throughout the year to inform whole school development and improvement.

PE at Oathall is loved by our students, it is a popular choice in both curriculum options and in our extra- curricular activities. We offer GCSE PE and Cambridge National Sports Studies courses for KS4. Our extra-curricular provision run by the PE team provides opportunities for our students in Football, Basketball, Cricket, Hockey, Rugby, Gymnastics, Tennis, Athletics, Dance and Netball. We aim to offer a broad PE sports curriculum and we are keen to ensure all our learners find a passion for life-long physical sport or an activity that they can take forward into their life. We are looking for an enthusiastic, highly committed and dynamic teacher, who shares our values, to join our team and develop with us in our PE faculty.

Oathall Community College is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. All appointments are subject to an enhanced DBS disclosure.

Application forms and further details about Oathall may be obtained from the College or the college website www.oathall.org . Completed forms should be returned as soon as possible, together with a letter of application no more than 2 sides of A4, but no later than 9am on Tuesday 7 May. Interviews will take place on Friday 10 May.

Applications may be considered as they are received.

"Oathall is a large, happy school community" Ofsted inspection 2023

Oathall is a mixed comprehensive secondary school for students aged between 11 and 16.  We are situated on the boundaries of the town of Haywards Heath and the village of Lindfield in the heart of Mid-Sussex. The college opened in 1938 and has a full spectrum of specialist accommodation and facilities including well-equipped classrooms, a music centre, library, drama & dance studios, a fitness gym and a large sports hall. Outside we have large playing fields used for sport, a floodlit full-size 3G artificial turf pitch and a five acre farm. In 2022, we were told that Oathall was a confirmed project under the DFE school rebuilding progrmme. We anticipate the project will commence in around 2026-2027.

Our teaching and learning aim is simply to ensure the best possible progress and high attainment for every student.  We offer a broad, balanced curriculum based on our knowledge of our students that challenges and motivates students to achieve their best. Academic and vocational success is complemented by an extensive extra curricular programme. Oathall prides itself on its excellent pastoral organisation and inclusion policy which is recognised as an example of best practice. Pastoral care is based around a year group structure. We also operate a traditional house system, consisting of four houses, Discovery, Endeavour, Pioneer and Voyager.

Oathall works in a spirit of co-operation and industry with a deep respect for high standards of attitude and attainment. This, together with an excellent curriculum and friendly atmosphere, leads to the education of a first-rate set of well-adjusted and highly qualified young people. The strong and effective teaching staff, excellent resources and atmosphere of hard work ensure that Oathall children have the highest possible quality of learning.
