POSITION:Assistant Head (Early Years)

TO WHOM RESPONSIBLE: Executive Head of Early Years

MAIN PURPOSE: To assume responsibility for the leadership and management of EY1-EY4 in Nursery

MAIN TASKS:The successful candidate will assume responsibility for the specific areas listed below. He/she will also be required to carry out such duties as the Executive Head of Early Years and/or the Master may reasonably direct from time-to-time.

NURSERY LEADERSHIP:

• To lead and manage the nursery classes, whilst working closely and collaboratively with the Executive Head of Early Years, and other members of the Nursery Senior and Middle Leadership Team. To give clear direction and forward- thinking leadership in particular areas of responsibility. 

• To play a key role in development, and timely provision, of planning for the Nursery. To monitor and guide teachers to support the best possible progress and attainment for all students.

• To support the Executive Head of Early Years in all matters relating to the Nursery

• To assist the Executive Head of Early Years and the Deputy Head of Early Years to communicate clearly and regularly with the parents, establishing and maintaining supportive and positive two-way contact.

• To collaborate with SLT in other nurseries in the Wellington group to support the development and progress of the nursery.

MANAGEMENT:

• To be a member of the Early Years Senior Leadership Team and to lead and support the class teachers, specialist teachers and TA’s in the nursery. To work collaboratively with the Assistant Head to support the effective and impactful implementation of the Huili curriculum to ensure it is broad, balanced, rigorous, and well-delivered. To create an ethos of high expectations in a nursery, where clear and measurable outcomes will be achieved although English is not the native language of many pupils. To meet regularly the Executive Head of Early Years to anticipate, plan and develop the Nursery curriculum delivery.

STAFF SUPPORT:

• To develop and maintain good working relationships with all colleagues within the Nursery, based upon professional two-way communication. To provide support for colleagues as required, using a coaching and/or mentoring model.

MONITORING AND APPRAISAL:

• To monitor the effectiveness and quality of the teaching and learning by regular learning walks, classroom observation, monitoring of planning and reporting and monitoring of books/learning journeys.

• To provide feedback in written and spoken form to individuals and groups regarding the effectiveness of the teaching and learning process at Huili Nursery.

• To advise promptly the Head Early Years of any support colleagues may require or of any impending notice being given by staff moving on.

MANAGEMENT OF STAFF:

• To lead on the daily management of the academic staff employed in the Nursery and to be responsible for their deployment within that Nursery, liaising with the Head and Deputy Head of Early Years. This includes using to best effect such Teaching Assistants and Early Years Assistants as have been allocated to the relevant Year Group, providing appropriate support and development if required. 

WELFARE/PASTORAL CARE:

• To ensure the policies, practices and parental communications are established and maintained to support the physical, emotional and social development of all individual pupils. To ensure safeguarding policy and practice is followed at all times and to report any issues to the Designated Safeguarding Lead in a timely fashion.

TIMETABLE:

• To monitor the impact of the Nursery timetable and to liaise the Deputy Head of the Early Years in the provision of a timetable which is both adhered to by all concerned and satisfies the requirements of the Huili Early Years curriculum.

ABSENTEEISM:

• To work with the Executive Head of Early Years to ensure that necessary alterations to the teaching timetable are implemented and communicated so that adequate cover is provided for any absenteeism (maintaining Nursery safe ratio’s at all times).

GENERAL POLICIES:

• To understand, develop, implement and monitor the general policies, including, but not limited to, those for Behaviors, Discipline, Anti-Bullying and Child Protection within the Nursery.

TEACHING:

• To teach a suitable timetable, being able to support or cover colleagues as required.

POLICIES:

• To advise and implement policies and practices within the Nursery.

SCHOOL TRIPS:

• To co-ordinate the scheduling and planning trips, visits etc. and to support with carrying out Risk Assessments and suitability to ensure highest quality and safety for all students.

MANAGEMENT OF RESOURCES

• To support with effective deployment of resources within the Nursery.

• To liaise with the Executive Head of Early Years on budgeting as required. 

NEW MEMBERS OF STAFF:

• To assist the Executive Head of Early Years with the appointment of staff within the Nursery.

STAFF DEVELOPMENT:

• To assist the Executive Head of Early Years in organising meaningful and effective Staff Development and INSET days, including induction. To write and deliver internal CPD as required.

• To oversee and be directly involved, as directed by the Executive Head of Early  Years in the Staff Appraisal system.

ASSESSMENT AND REPORTING:

• To monitor and support the management of all forms of assessment, ensure that appropriate target setting and pupil development spring from these.

• Ensure clear communication of assessment and student outcomes to parents and colleagues in the Nursery. To lead with Pupil Progress and the meaningful and impactful use of assessment data. To support with data triangulation to ensure accurate and effective reporting and target setting.

• To review these processes annually and advise accordingly the Executive Head of Early Years.

TRANSITION:

• To work with other teaching staff to establish a natural, seamless transition to Huili school is well supported. 

• To lead effective transition of students joining the Nursery to ensure their needs are well met and students settle well.

ADMISSIONS:

• To assist the Executive Head of Early Years in

implementing the admissions process for potential new pupils, whether through meeting new parents, interviewing or assessment/observations.

NURSERY DEVELOPMENT:

• To assist the Master and the Executive Head of Early Years in the creation and implementation of the Nursery School Development Plan.

MAJOR EVENTS IN NURSERY CALENDAR:

• To assist in the organisation of all major events e.g. Open Days; Presentations; concerts; plays; Sports Day, among others.

VALUES & MISSION STATEMENT:   

• To make all pupils aware of the Huili Nursery Values and Mission Statement. To support ‘Values in Action’, to imbue the Huili values and actively model them daily in all actions. To encourage all Huili staff, students and parents to do the same.
